Dinner menu help

We're having some friends over for a holiday dinner on Saturday night, and I'm still working on the menu.  I was planning on doing tourtiere, a pork pie dish that my family used to always have on Christmas Eve.  A few areas I need help:

- there will be a couple of non-meat eaters, so I was thinking of doing a vegetarian pie as well.  Any recommendations?

- what sides would you serve with it?

- there should be 9 people for dinner - should two pies in total (one meat and one veg) be enough?

Re: Dinner menu help

  • I'd say you could go with a potato side, either mashed or roasted, and maybe some roasted veggies? (like, broccoli and cauliflower?)

I have no idea about a vegetarian pie recipe, sorry.

And whether or not it's enough depends on how big the pies are.  You might want to do 2 meat pies and 1 veg pie?

  • I found these recipes. They sound pretty good to me.

    One  and two

I also think depending on how many carnivores you have you may want to make two pies.

  • I think one torti?re totally serves 8 (we do it Christmas eve too!). The one we make has 2 lbs of meat in the original recipe, and I always end up scaling it back to half the filling. The 5 of us still can never finish it!

We always do torti?re with chili sauce, and a big, bright slaw. I find you need something to balance out the heaviness of the dish. What about doing spanakopita for the vegetarians (if they aren't vegan)? Here's a version for one that's got a crust instead of filo.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.

kaesha, I was totally thinking of something spanakopita-like, but the only recipes I saw were with the filo, which I didn't want to do since I'll already be making the other pie crust. Thanks!

I mom always did two pies for Christmas eve, for 6 of us.  I know there was always some leftovers, but can't remember how much.  There are also 3 big eaters in that group, though.  I'll have to check how much meat is in there.
