As LB mentioned, January's book club is memoir at my house. I picked five that are kind of all over the place but all seem pretty interesting:
- I Love Yous Are for White People-- Family flees communist Vietnam to west LA.. coming-of-age/family issues etc
- Night -- WWII Nazi death camp, boy forced to witness family's death
- Stitches -- This one is a "graphic novel", which I've never read before, but the story sounds interesting, and it got good reviews. Boy who is chronically sick ends up with cancer as a result of attempts to make him well.. family issues, coming-of-age.
- The Unlikely Disciple -- nonreligious Brown student undertakes a sort of anthropology experiment by becoming a student at Falwell's Liberty University and talks about what it was like.
- The Things They Carried -- Chronicle of Vietnam soldiers. From GR: "They carried malaria tablets, love letters, 28-pound mine detectors, dope, illustrated bibles, each other. And if they made it home alive, they carried unrelenting images of a nightmarish war that history is only beginning to absorb."
Re: S/O Book club... January vote
I vote for NOT Stiches! I am not a fan of graphic novels (they're comic books!) plus I can't get it on the kindle.
ETA: Google image search for graphic novel
ETA2: I'm really not trying to go on a smear campaign against this book, but here is a page from the book!
The last two both sound great, but I'll vote for The Unlikely Disciple since it's been on my to-read list forever.
I also read "Night" in HS so I'd prefer not to read it again.
Not a fan of "graphic novels".
So my pick is Unlikely Disciple.
I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to trash it. I just wanted to make sure people knew what they were voting for!
Back when I was on NBC board a lot, I signed up for a book read along thing. Turns out it was a graphic novel and I didn't know until I started and was all "WTF is this?!"
i'll vote unlikely disciple.
