Question for moms
We're going to have a simple party here for Hudson's 4th birthday on a Saturday in January. All of the kids we're inviting are our friends' kids, so it will give us a chance for us adults to hang out, too. We'll probably have beer and wine on hand for our friends. My question is, would you rather attend your friends' kids' birthday party in the afternoon (lunchtime) or in the evening (dinner)?

Neither of my kids are nappers anymore, but our friends' kids still are. Evening parties (or a brunch party) seems to work best for families w/ napping kids.
Oh my gosh, I feel so dumb.
I always plan (well, last year and this) on around 1:00 to have T's party. His prime nap time is between 1 and 3. Hmmm....genius award goes to me. Crap.
We have to do it in the afternoon as well, because we have family and friends that travel from Flint for it - those with kids get a nap in the car on the way, then a sugar buzz for the ride home :P

Yup, your post made me realize I should not have a 1 pm party for my soon to be 2 year old's party. So I just changed it to 11.

Freaking needy kids messing up everything!
I say 11 am - 1 pm for strictly a kids party. If you want it to be more of a friends gathering (i.e. with some drinks) and celebrate Hudson's b-day at the same time, than i would do 5 - 7 or list 8 pm as the ending time, but have the main activities over by 7pm, so early bedtime kids can head home. I just say this because hate having a drink or two early on and then not drinking anymore for the rest of the day. I get sleepy.
I know the TH is that way too, if he has a drink when we go out to dinner and stops, it makes him more tired than anything. I would rather have dinner, a drink or two, and then be able to put the kids to bed and relax the rest of the evening.

GVSU - thanks for the suggestion. I just wonder how sleep deprived I'm going to be. An afternoon gathering sounds tempting but I feel like our friends would have more fun if they came in the evening. Then again, if the weather is bad, I don't want people driving home in the dark...especially our Lansing friends. Hmmm...

We are keeping it low key this year (compared to last year.)
No theme, very little decorations, and we're getting some favorite local pizza (Bernie O's) bread sticks, pop, cake and ice cream and calling it good.
What about you?
We are also doing very low key. We got Hudson a large indoor trampoline for Christmas so I know that will be the main entertainment piece. Haven't thought about food yet but I will let Hudson choose what theme of cake he wants and then maybe get some party favors and hats in the same theme. Usually I make his cake but I seriously doubt that will happen this year. Pizza is a great idea!
Indoor trampoline sounds awesome. Is that the blow up one?
I got my nephews a "jump-oline" for Christmas. It's a blow up trampoline, for indoor and outdoor use. My SIL has no room in her house to blow it up though.
But we do. 
Maybe she'll let me borrow it.
I really should try to make T's cake. They are so dang expensive! I wonder how awful mine would turn out?

Hudson told me today that he wanted a Spongebob cake. How predictable! It looks like the Wilton cake pans I normally use have been discontinued for Spongebob, too. I guess that makes my decision easier. I just hope Meijer can make Spongebob.

It will fit in our basement but hopefully none of the kids will hit their heads on the ceiling. The blow-up one sounds cool!
Spongebob would be easy! Bake a rectange cake, and frost 4/5th yellow. strip of white, and then brown. Detail with eyes, nose and mouth. Add dark yellow spots. For arms and legs, just squirt frosting from a bag for that shape.
Hmm, you're right, that does sound easy. I've even taking cake decorating classes...you'd think I'd be up for this.
