Those that gift holiday baking

How many things to you make and about how much of each thing do you give?  I made some stuff up last year, but probably went a bit cheap.

Derek is out of the house all weekend so I thought I'd do an early morning Costco run then crank the tunes and get my bake on.

Soooo, tell me what you do.

We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?

Re: Those that gift holiday baking

  • I don't do a whole lot, to be honest.  I get those little boxes for t-shirts (the cube ones, though.) And fill those up.  Everyone gets about a dozen cookies (peanut butter with kisses), some white chocolate-covered pretzels, and maybe a dozen of the little chocolate/peanut butter things I make.... and a small container (6 ounces?) of homemade chai mix.
  • It sometimes depends on the size of the containers I have.  I get the little boxes and treat bags at Hobby Lobby or Michaels, and whatever fits in there is what they get.  Or, if it's something like chai tea or hot chocolate mix, I find pretty jars at the dollar store and go with those.  Or a mix-in-a-jar gift goes in a mason jar.  I found paper loaf pans at Michaels last week that are perfect for making mini-loaves, and will fit in the treat bag to stay fresh.

  • This year I'm doing a a tray of traditional treats.  I'm packaging them in a square, paper, 9x9 baking tray lined with colorful paper and wrapped gift-basket style with colored cellophane.

Lefse, both kinds of kringle, krumkakke, spritz, sandbakkles

  • I used to do a ton.  I'd fill ~9"x9" boxes full of cookies, baklava, truffles...  It got to be way too much and instead of scaling back, I just stopped.  I may do 3 things this year but they'll be for home and to take to my family on Christmas day.  Though I have promised to ship some rosettes to another Knottie if those turn out ok.

  • Okay, I have no idea what Anna just said.  Is this how other people feel when Any and I talk WoW?  ;)

I'm not doing it this Christmas, but in previous years I've bought holiday tins from Walmart or Target and filled them with brownie squares, chocolate chip cookies, dipped Oreos and either gingerbread, peanut butter or sugar cookies.  I think four kinds of treats provides a nice variety without being too hard to manage in the kitchen.

    i did!

.....and then we promptly ate them when my niece came over.  i hadn't made a huge batch.  Maybe 3 dozen.  i think I finally have them down to the point I don't hardly mess any up.  It only took 4 years. So we're making more Saturday.

I ordered my iron yesterday - can't wait to use it.

Oh, and for any Starbucks Cranberry Bliss Bar fans, I tried out the Top Secret Recipes recipe for them on Sunday and my H said they're even better than the Starbucks bars.

  • I package my treats in carboard gift boxes. I usually pick them up at the container store. I make a tower with them and then tie it all together with some wire edged pretty ribbon.

In the past I've made biscotti, candied nuts, gingersnaps, lemon squares, fudge and potica bread.   Hopefully I'll get the drive to do some holiday baking this year. Since I haven't even started holiday shopping yet, I'm not so sure how far I'll get.
