Taking a 2 year old's temp

How do I do it?

I've tried rectally and this was not going to happen.  She wouldn't have anything to do with it.

I've tried the head one where you put it on there and that was a no go.

I tried under the arm and she wouldn't go for it either...

Help!  I feel like a real jerk whenever the pedi asks me if she had / has a temp and I have no answer for her besides she felt warm....

Re: Taking a 2 year old's temp

  • Bahaha, I love that you tried rectally with a two year old - SERIOUSLY :)

I always use the ear monitor.  It's quick.

  • The ear was a no go too.  She ripped it from my hand and covered her ears.   :S

I swear I feel like a new mom with this kid.

  • Sounds like you're going to have to treat this as you would if you were sucking snot out of her nose.  Do the leg hold.  Lay her on the ground with her arms at her side and straddle her chest, squeezing her arms so they cant move (lol).  If you go this route, I'd do the simple over the forehead technique.. it'll take 5 seconds.

  • If she won't let you do axillary, then just do tympanic. The forehead ones are not accurate. One of the MDs at work did a research study on them and found that they fluctuate.
