Christmas/Winter Holiday dinner?

SIL and I are in charge of Christmas dinner.....we don't normally celebrate the holidays together so have no long standing traditions with DH's family.

I am not crazy about a turkey b/c we just did this for Thanksgiving.

i am sort of intrigued by Yorkshire puddings but that calls for a roast.....

so what do you guys eat?

Re: Christmas/Winter Holiday dinner?

  • Ham, my mom does ham every single year.  If it were up to me, we'd do a beef tenderloin, but can't beat tradition...
  • the prime rib i posted last week (and made last christmas) rocked. would only be improved with some yorkshire puddings.

last year our christmas dinner was prime rib, PW's mashed potatoes (you have that recipe already), and green beans with shallots and lemon. it was just us and that was still too much food but it was easy and awesome. dessert was my grandma's chocolate trifle.

  • Christmas for me = pure decadence. Prime rib, beef tenderloin (one year I did a recipe with shallots and port and bacon and it was AMAZING), maybe something like a seafood risotto.

DH and I are big fans of duck breast, specifically duck au poivre, but that's hard to serve a group because some people get squicked out by rare duck. We were going to have it Christmas Eve, but since we're hosting some unadventurous eaters we've switched the menu to America's Test Kitchen's 5 Cheese White Lasagna with prosciutto and artichoke hearts. It's still decadent but not scary and can be prepared ahead.

  • On Christmas we traditionally have ham.  Lamb has also recently started to appear on the table.  I like both.  On Christmas Eve, my MIL makes homemade enchiladas and lasagna (they don't really go together but they are both really good).
  • My mom has made lasagna before and that makes for a great Christmas dinner.  For Christmas Eve, she does different soups, usually seafood soup and chili.

  • Standing Prime rib roast - yum!  You could easily do a yorkie pudding with that.  I have been known to make it with bacon grease too!
  • We have a long standing tradion of doing lasagna, with fresh bread, antipasta, etc. It's great! It also helps when we end up splitting Christmas in two homes, between mine and my H's families.

  • No tradition.  When I cook, it could be anything.  This year, it's appetizers for dinner!
  • We don't have a specific tradition. I am thinking about trying a turducken this year if we host or are by ourselves. Just the breast, though, layering a boneless breast or turkey, duck & chicken together w/ stuffing between the layers and rolling it up like a jelly roll. I've done just turkey that way, but haven't found specific directions for turducken. The trick will be figuring out how long to cook it.
  • I have no idea what we'll do for actual xmas dinner but "our" xmas dinner this year is going to be bangers (with cider gravy) & mash.

  • We always have rib roast (with an addictive mustard crouton topping) and boozed-up chocolate mousse. The rest varies.

    ILs usually do lasagna.

  • The ILs always do a ham. When we used to do Christmas Eve with my BFF and her family, we always did a ham and beans.

If we're with my family, it varies. Sometimes ham, sometimes lasagna. Sometimes other stuff. I did this awesome arugula salad with goat cheese and pomegranates a few year ago and I'll do it again this year.

Yorkshire puddings could be good, or popovers! Those would go well with a roast or something. Maybe something comfort food-y, like a pot pie? I saw a recipe in the Williams-Sonoma catalogue for a short ribs pot pie that looked AMAZING.

  • My family always does a big roast beef. Yum.

For Christmas Eve, my dad goes totally overboard and does a multiple course seafood dinner: oyster stew, crab cakes, stuffed shrimp, lobster mac and cheese. Then we hang out, groaning we're so full, with our pants unbuttoned, until we all pretend we're still practicing Catholics and go to 10pm Mass.

  • last year when I hosted Christmas dinner for the whole family, I did a beef tenderloin that was just excellent (if I do say so myself!). (It was actually from last year's December issue of Martha Stewart Living)

There was a grainy mustard/horseradish sauce that went with it that was delicious and I made caramelized acorn squash (also from the issue of the magazine).

I can't remember what veggies I served...maybe asparagus? anyway, it all turned out great. I'll definitely be doing the beef tenderloin again at some point.

  • We've done a lot of different things. We're doing Honeybaked ham this year, because I loooove it and I kind of insisted upon it. In past years, we've done prime rib, beef tenderloin, and a seafood medley.

One year I want to do the traditional "feast of the seven fishes" on Christmas Eve, but I don't think I can handle all of the work this year.

  • we have lots of holiday dinners

Ham and crab cakes on Christmas eve

    Turkey dinner on Christmas

on the 28th DH and I host dinner and we'll have a standing rib roast.  I have one blogged if you want to check it out.

  • DH's family does prime rib or standing rib roast (sadly overcooked).  My family does ham.  If it were up to me I'd do stuffed beef tenderloin we do at easter.  It's amazing.  Cooks Illustrated, if you have any of their recipes, or I bet you can easily find it on google.  I'd do the stuffed beef tenderloin, twice baked potatoes and roasted asparagus.  Maybe some popovers or fresh rolls.  An eggnog cheesecake.  Man I wish I was hosting now!

  • christmas eve we usually have some kind of beef, if we're with my family. dh's tradition with his mom is more appetizery/snacky stuff all night long rather than a big meal.

christmas day no matter which place is basically a repeat of thanksgiving.  one year my parents tried to change it up and my sister and i staged a revolt. :)

  • My family doesn't like to do dishes, so we keep it simple. NY Strip or Ribeye with sweet potatoes or baked potatoes, a vegetable and cheesecake.
