BFing question....not sure where else to ask

lurker looking for advice.  I have no idea where else to ask this.  Here's the situation: I was on antibiotics for an abcessed milk duct in my breast a couple of weeks back.  It was hell on my son's digestive system (diaherrea, bloody stool, dipe rash like no other) so we switched to formula while I was on the meds.  The symptoms cleared up.  He got his 2 month shots on the 5th, and I started nursing him that night since I had finished my meds the day before.  On Thursday of last week (3 days after his shots) he started up again with the blood, diaherrea, etc.  Switched him to formula yet again through the weekend. Things cleared up, and so I started nursing.  Yesterday, I was put back on antibiotics (different kind) for a UTI (the fun never stops).

I keep going back and forth between hanging up the ol nursing bra for good, and keeping at it.  I tear up (literally) every time i think about not nursing anymore, but I don't want to make this decision for selfish reasons.  What do I do?  Do I risk another hellish dipe rash and keep nursing?  Do I pump and dump for 10 days and keep him on formula, then start nursing again?  My husband travels for work, and I have a 2 year old so it's challenging to keep up with the pumping and feeding.  Furthermore, I don't think switching him back and forth between formula and BM is such a great idea either. Have any of you taken Nitrofuran Monohyd Macro (generic) or Macrobid for a UTI while nursing?  How did your babe's react if you have?  I know this is a rambler, but I'm really at a loss.

  • are you sure it's the antibiotics that is doing this to your DS?  My DS had/has food allergies and was allergic to the food I was eating and he was getting from nursing.  I'd talk to your doctor and see if there is anything else they would recommend.  I had to pump for 2 months while giving DS hypoallergenic formula and I was on an elimination diet.

  • Initially, I thought food allergies too but I had been nursing for 7 weeks with no problems when the GI issues started.  When do allergies appear?  Do they just show up out of the blue or are they present from birth?  I'm guessing it's not a dairy allergy since he does ok on formula, but will look into the elimination of other things like wheat/gluten...I know that can do a number on digestion.

  • my DS was born with egg/peanut allergy - but manifested in severe eczema on his face/head.  but bloody stool, etc... sounded like an allergy to me.  sorry I can't be of more help.  I hope it resolves soon!

maybe try asking a local le leche league mom?

  • Ondrea- took your advice.  Called my ped, and my hospital's lactation dept.  Got some VERY helpful info, and I now have a plan. Why I didn't think to do this before, I'll never know (let's blame it on sleep deprivation). THANKS GIRLS!!!!

  • There is a BFing board on the Bump where you could ask.

I would also strongly encourage you to call a LLL leader. They have a free hotline. I think they can give you a ton of information, especially about specific antibiotics. http://www.lllusa.org/COWY/DenverCO.html

Finally here is an article I found on antibiotics and side effects in kids. I think they mean giving them directly to the kid but I have definitely heard of it going through the milk too. http://www.askdrsears.com/topic/childhood-illnesses/medicine-cabinet/antibiotic-side-effects
