umbrella stroller rec

so we have the uppababy vista and i love it a lot.  it is awesome since the kid and i truck at least 2.5 miles/day in it.

however, we now feel the need to get an umbrella stroller since we travel a lot and the uppababy takes up room in the trunk that is needed for suitcases, referee gear, pack n play, etc.  (we will not be getting a bigger car, nope, not happening)

plus, we have a trip to la in january.  the kid was great in the uppababy with the car seat adaptor for other plane trips but he is so much bigger now i think he needs more room.

must haves: sunshade, lightweight, somewhat sturdy but no need for super stability, not astronomically expensive but i don't have a great frame of reference on these.

Re: umbrella stroller rec

  • I need one soon, too. I love my City Select but I'm in the market for an umbrella as well.

  • we have a maclaren and I love it, you can find them cheaper on ebay too, usually last years model. After the holidays we will be getting another and giving the old one to Grandmom since she needs one

ETA: we have the triumph which reclines, i dont think the basic model (volo?) does

    David John 4.19.01
    Jonathan Dean 4.5.08
    Anna Capri 5.4.11
  • ooooh recline. that is a nice feature to have too.  good call kell.

  • I can't say enough good things about our Maclaren Triumph (it's the mid-range one...a little fancier/sturdier than the volo, but not as $$ as the other ones they sell).

We mainly use it to walk to/from daycare each day, but we also use it for daytrips and it's been to England twice. We find ourselves reaching for that more than the bugaboo, which lately we only use for walks around the neighborhood.

ETA: We got ours from albeebaby.com last year around the holidays...they have good sales from time to time.

  • We also have the maclaren and I like it---it might be the triumph as well. Id say spend the extra money and get the model with the full leg/footrest thingy instead of the simple bar at the bottom for the kid to rest his/her feet. Ours is the latter and I wish I had the former. Also, our neighbor had a maxi cosi and it was great, and comes with more creature comforts than the maclaren. Ive used hers though and its comparable in quality so Id consider it. Sunshine kids makes some nice stroller accessories that you might want to consider bc most Maclarens come with almost nothing.

  • i like both the gluxe and lite now the little guy is older. i hate the maclerans.
  • I went to Buy Buy Baby with the boy to try out umbrella strollers for a trip to Chicago. This was when he was 9 months?  I ended up foregoing an umbrella for the City Mini. The umbrellas didn't recline far enough back for naps on the go, and the City Mini was so light and easy to fling open/closed at airport gates and had more padding/comfort for the baby and I could attach a tray for snacks/cups. It's now my everything stroller. I don't know your uppababy well but I'd imagine it takes up less space in a trunk. Food for thought.
  • I can't think this far in advance at the moment but we will need one of these at some point. I hope I remember to check back and save this post. Otherwise, at least Maclaren sticks out in my mind.

  • We bought this http://comfortfirst.com/p-135719-chicco-liteway-umbrella-stroller.aspx before we went to Turks and Caicos and love, love, love it.

It is extremely lightweight and fit perfectly on the plane and in the rental car. It is super easy to open and close as well as reclines which was nice when she wanted to take a nap. I tried out the McClaren but didn't like it nearly as much.

I'm glad you mentioned this. The main reason why I need an umbrella is bc of flying to Cayman in Feb. I remember with H we just checked his umbrella at the gate. I'd like to do this again.

I'm also debating what to do about Disney. We'll be driving (yes, with a 15 month old!! ugh.) and I'm wondering if we should bring the City Select because I love it and it is easy to steer and push or if I should get a good umbrellaish stroller. I'd prefer an umbrella so it's smaller but for comfort (for both of us) I'm thinking of bringing the CS.

Yes, I really like it. It is not flimsy like the other umbrella strollers and use that exclusively now for everything including our vacations. It also comes with a bag and shoulder strap which made it very easy to gate check and to protect it from dirt.

  • Just a recent post on baby cheapskates in re to strollers.
