how do you un-salt yourself?

i had a salty lunch yesterday and a snack that was salty as well..and i've been feeling the effects of it. i was extremely dry-mouthed all day yesterday..i had about 16 glasses of water (can you *imagine* the bathroom trips?!) but i'm still slightly feeling it today. really, it wasn't *that* salty of food..it was just a little bit more than normal for lunch (i had over salted left overs and some potato chips...the food wasn't even "bad" tasting for being too salty...just you could notice that it was saltier than "normal")

so maybe it's even something else....but what could it be? and if it's just the salt, what else do i need to do besides water? i also had 2 glasses of milk and a glass of OJ on top of all that water yesterday.

THIS. keep drinking water. add a little lemon in your water to help too. this might be TMI but i know when i'm good when my pee is clear.. and that is a LOT of water drinking.

When you say you're feeling the side effects do you mean you're all puffy and swollen?

no, just dry mouth. i don't feel puffy/bloated or anything. but i can't stop drinking water. i'm on my 8th glass for the day right now.

I have this happen sometimes and when i do i put 1/2 a nuun* tablet in my water (watered down sports drink might work, too).  For me it seems like it's an electrolyte imbalance (more than just salt) that seems to correct this way.

thanks. i've heard of nuun. if it's electrolytes, i will try gatorade.. we have some of that at home. if that still doesn't work, i will look into nuun.

  • Gatorade, even though it has a decent amount of salt in it, kills the salt flavor for me pretty quick.

  • i have propel, not gatorade at home...will this do the trick or should i send h out to get some gatorade?

As long as it contains the major electrolytes you should be fine.

  • Propel should be fine it still has a huge amount of electrolytes and unlike Gatorade actually has 10% of your daily value of some vitamins (I think vitamin C, E and B6) .

  • Only because you are pregnant, I think you shouldn't assume it's the salt giving you dry mouth. I would call your dr's office or nurse line and explain your symptoms. I have no idea what dry mouth means... just know that some people get gestational diabetes or high blood pressure... 100 other possibilities that happen to pregnant ladies. When growing a life inside of your body, I think it's worth asking the doctor.

Side note: Laughing at un-salt yourself. I thought the title meant that you did a salt scrub and didn't know how to rinse it off.

  • Definitely water, but honestly, being a pregnant woman, you really can't have too much salt because of your blood volume being doubled. It's actually good for you to have a little more salt now. But you do have to combat it with water. You could try drinking some Gatorade or another electrolyte drink, just steer clear of the artificial sweeteners. :)

thank you! i had a HBP scare, as well as a GD scare both within the last month (i failed my 1 hr, passed my 3 hr)..and while my blood pressure scares *me*, it doesn't scare my doc. i normally am on the very low range of normal (115/70), but now i'm dancing in the high range of normal (130/80)..so i don't like it, but it's something that they're used to seeing as "normal".

i will mention the dry mouth to the doc on my appt on friday, but for now, i think i'm cured! yay!

i had a coconut water  instead of the propel last night because i found it in the fridge...i thought it had electrolytes..but now that i'm reading about it, it doesn't. but by bed time, i was still just a little dry, but nothing to complain about, and i'm back to normal today.

I forgot about coconut water!  That's a good one, too -- i think it has electrolytes, minus sodium.  It's better for treating dehydration, though, than plain water.  We talked about it for first aid w/one of the outdoor schools i worked at... let me see if i can find the paper (if that sort of thing interests you).

  • I do have your email address, but i don't have the whole paper, just the abstract, so here it is:

Rehydration with sodium-enriched coconut water after exercise-induced dehydration.

    Source

Sports Science Unit, School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

    Abstract

This crossover study assessed the effectiveness of plain water (PW), sports drink (SD), fresh young coconut water (CW) and sodium-enriched fresh young coconut water (SCW) on whole body rehydration (R) and plasma volume (PV) restoration after exercise-induced dehydration. Ten healthy male subjects ran at 65% of VO2max in an environmental temperature of 32.06 +/- 0.02 degree C with a relative humidity (rh) of 53.32 +/- 0.17% for 90 minutes to lose 3% body weight (BW). During the 2-hour rehydration period, subjects drank, in randomized order, PW, SD, CW or SCW equivalent to 120% of BW lost in three boluses representing 50, 40 and 30% of the fluid lost at 0, 30, and 60 minutes, respectively. In all trials subjects were still somewhat dehydrated even after the 2-hour rehydration period. Indexes of percent rehydration with PW, SD, CW and SCW were 58 +/- 2, 68 +/- 2, 65+/- 2 and 69 +/- 1%, respectively, with significantly better rehydration with SD and SCW. The rehydration indexes for SD and SCW were significantly lower than PW (p < 0.01). PV was restored to euhydration levels after 2 hours of rehydration with SD, CW and SCW but not with PW. The plasma glucose concentration were significantly higher when SD, CW and SCW were ingested. SCW was similar in sweetness to CW and SD but caused less nausea and stomach upset compared to SD and PW. In conclusion, ingesting SCW was as good as ingesting a commercial sports drink for whole body rehydration after exercise-induced dehydration but with better fluid tolerance.

    Yeah, i love a good abstract :)

I think some are "enriched" and some are "preserved" with various sodium compounds (not completely sure, though)... but if you're feeling better, then that's good news!
