Help me with a New Year's resolution

Lately I've been overwhelmed and disappointed by the large number of classic novels I have yet to read. I'm setting a goal to read 10 by the end of 2012. I need help with the list.

I own Wuthering Heights (I remeber that I loved it, but remember little from when I read it in highschool so I'm revisiting it.) I also own Pride and Prejudice, so those will be 2 of the 10. I've already read the Scarlet Letter, Little Women, Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mocking Bird (although I don't remember too much of that either.)

What books would you suggest? This is a list I've thought of. Please give your opinions if you've read any of them, or add others that you loved.

-The Color Purple
- Anna Karenina
- A Farewell to Arms
- The Grapes of Wrath
- Jane Eyre
- Don Quixote
- The Great Gatsby
- The Cather in the Rye
- Great Expectations
- War and Peace
- Light in August
- A Tale of Two Cities

I know there are a million more to choose from. Help please. :)

Re: Help me with a New Year's resolution

  • The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books.

  • - Jane Eyre - loved
    - The Great Gatsby - iffy, but a good, short read for a classic
    - A Tale of Two Cities - LOVED, but I'm a huge francophile, especially of the french revolutionary era.

Other suggestions that I enjoyed reading - Lord of the Flies, Huckleberry Finn, Hamlet, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Madame Bovary

If you don't remember To Kill a Mockingbird, I'd reread...it's such a great book.

I think I will. Sadly, there were a few classics that I read in high school that didn't get the attention they deserved. Mostly because I was racing to finish them for an exam. haha

I asked over on the Book Club and Jane Eyre, The Great Gatsby,  A Tale of Two Cities and Madame Bovary were all listed as favorites as well. Thanks!

  • I hated Catcher in the Rye more than I can possible put into words. The Great Gatsby was just okay for me.

Totally ditto To Kill a Mockingbird. That is one of my top favorite books ever. Lord of the Flies is also a good one.

I don't think it's a true classic yet, but I absolutely think The Handmaid's Tale will be one day and that it should be so I'd add that one if you can.

Probably I should do this too because I also haven't read most of the books on your list. Embarrassed

  • This is a great idea for a New Year's resolution. One of my 30 by 30 goals is to read 10 of the top 100 books. I might have to change that to classics since l haven't read most of the books on your list.

Thank you! This is what i was trying to avoid. lol

  • Some of my favorite classics (mostly already listed):

    Jane Eyre
    To Kill a Mockingbird
    Farhenheit 451
    Lord of the Flies
    1984
    The Awakening

  • I agree with 1984 and would add Animal Farm to that list.
