xp: Tips for cleaning bathtubs and closets

Okay, so the bathroom in this house is small and it is kind of...well...gross.  The "professional cleaning" didn't do much (the land lord said it was professionally cleaned).

Anyway, the bath tub has a texture on the bottom of it (a bunch of circles).  The circles are scuzzy).  I've tried: comet, bar keepers friend, scotch brite pad, and magic eraser.

The magic eraser *works* but it is using them up super fast.  AND it isn't 100% clean.

Any other suggestions?  It is years of grime that is ground into the texture.  I am a big "bath person" so this disgustingness is quite upsetting to me!

Also, the closets (and I mean basically every closet and cabinet) is musty smelling.  Anything I can do?  I cleaned them out.  But, they still smell kind of funky.

  • No suggestions for the bathtub, Magic Erasers are always my go-to item!

As for the closets and cabinets, you can leave the doors open for awhile if they're not in your way. Also, cut up a few dryer sheets and put them out in your cabinets and closets. How many will just depend on how big your closets are. My apartment closets were the same way, plus they smelled like smoke. I found that spraying Febreze fabric refresher inside them every so often really helped. Good luck!

  • My suggestion too was going to be the Magic Eraser, that's the only product I have found successful on textured shower floors.  My only other suggestion might be vinegar.  You don't have anything to lose by trying it.  Spray or pour it on the grime and let it sit, then maybe scrub with a brush.  I once lived in an apartment for 5 years and no matter what I tried I could NEVER get the shower/bath clean.  It was just disgusting so I feel your pain.  We are remodeling our bathroom in the spring and I can't wait to have a new bathtub that I can keep clean from the start.

  • Bathtub: Industrial strength Scrubbing Bubbles (Home Depot carries it) and a firm plastic bristled brush.  Spray, wait 15 min, scrub, rinse, repeat.  It sucks, and will probably require a couple of goes, but this worked on my new rental's kitchen floor that I would have sworn was gray when I moved in but is really white and tan patterned.

For the closet, put open boxes of baking soda (the fridge packs work well bc they have the side openings that trap a lot of smells) in there.  Also, if you have carpeting, the scented carpeting powder in the deodorizing scent (Resolve is the brand that comes to mind) vacuumed up works a small miracle.  If neither of those tricks work, it may be the walls and you may want to just add a quick coat of paint.

  • A bowl of vinegar could also suck the musty smell out of the closets.

Sorry I don't have a suggestion for the bathtub, that really sucks...

  • CLR? Our last apartment was "professionally cleaned" and it had rust rings in the toilet yuck!
  • We have a Shark handheld steamer with a scrub brush attachment that did wonders for getting the grime out of the texture in the bottom of our last bathtub.  Maybe if you have another kind of steamer you can hit it with that, then follow immediately with a stiff brush.

We put silica gel in old pantyhose and tucked it into the closet.  You could also use DampRid, since that's probably easier to find in stores.

  • Try a thin layer of either dish soap or laundry soap on the tub floor.  Let it sit for a while, then scrub and rinse as usual again with dish or laundry soap.  This is what the cleaning lady I use for my rentals does, and I've used it successfully on our tub as well.
  • I've heard using hydrogen peroxide on the tub will get it clean when nothing else will.
