BR: vent

So I had my 28w check-up today with my OB. Good news first: everything is looking good, got my Rogham shot, my weight is "great."

Bad news: My doctor is having a total knee replacement... next week! He'll be out for at least 4 weeks, depending on how recovery goes it could be much longer.

I get that he can't not have the surgery just because I'm pregnant, lol, but I'm frustrated that he didn't tell me ahead of time. And the doctor that I'll be seeing while he's out (and will likely deliver my babies, if he's not back in time) said that he will absolutely not do a vaginal delivery if Baby B is breech, which is what my doctor and I have been planning all along. I'm just bummed. I know the ultimate goal is healthy babies/healthy momma so if a c/s is in the cards, then I'm fine with it... I just liked having the option (assuming positions are favorable).

Oh, and my blood pressure is creeping up. So starting next week I have two appointments a week (one ultrasound and one NST). Things are getting fun!

  • Can your MFM deliver you instead - or does it not work like that?

I'm not sure. There are 3 MFM's in the practice that I see (though I've only ever met 2 of them) and I have asked them both if one of them would be at the delivery and they said "not unless there's a reason to." So, in other words- should complications arise before then where there is a concern with the twins, then yes... but otherwise they just do pre-natal stuff I guess.

I will have to mention it to them on Monday and see what they say, given the new development of my OB possibly not being there.

  • That sucks!  In the end I honestly didn't care who delivered these babies as long as they got them out since I was sooo miserable!  I scheduled my c/s when I was 34 weeks and a week before my c/s the schedule changed and my OB was not on call that day so another doctor delivered me.  Even with Abby my regular OB was not on duty, so a stranger delivered her...lol

In regards to the breech extraction.... none of the OBs in my practice would do a vaginal delivery if one of the twins was breech.  But, since I had a prior c/s I had to have another one anyway, plus Hannah ended up being breech.

My MFMs didn't deliver, they purely did the u/s..

  • Both of my babies had to be vertex for my OB to even consider a vaginal delivery. They both did end up flipping head down around 34 weeks, I think, but then it didn't matter anyway since I had to have a c/s because Baby B was estimated to be so much bigger. Hopefully yours will both end up vertex so you can have the vaginal delivery you want.

  • I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. :-(  I hope things work out they way you want them to.

Personally, I would infuriated that my birth plan was not being respected. You have the right to speak up for yourself and communicate your wants, and I would do just that. I would ask if their were other docs in the practice who are willing to do a vaginal delivery if baby b is breech.

Also, I know that everybody always says it doesn't matter how the baby came as long as they are healthy, but for a lot of women the birth experience does matter. Of course, I'm not saying avoid a c-section if it's absolutely medically necessary, but if it's not necessary, then you should be able to have your vaginal birth, especially because that is what you want. :-)

I totally agree with Jennrs.  But hopefully you will last 5 more weeks and it will be a non-issue!  :)

  • I agree... right now I'm just hoping that a) my OB heals quickly and is only out 4 weeks and b) that I am still pregnant after that.

I did ask if other doctor's would do a breech extraction for baby B and his explanation was that my OB is the more "natural" one of them all and has a lot of experience with breech babies so he is the most comfortable. The OB I saw today is the "old fart" so while he has delivered the most twins, he has also seen the most complications arise from a breech delivery, which is why he is against it. The other two doctors are new/young/inexperienced and he (personally) wouldn't want them attempting it, knowing that my babies are measuring bigger so far and knowing the risks involved.

He said if I refused to sign the c/s consent and he was my attending OB then he would of course deliver B breech... but I would never do that. I'm more of the type of "trust your doctor" so I would hope they wouldn't steer me wrong.

Anyway, it was just kind of a bummer appointment. Right now the babies are still transverse so it could be a moot point! Until we get closer, I'll just keep hoping for a vaginal delivery but "preparing" for a c/s just in case.
