DH deploying for first time...advice?

My hubby has been in the Guard for about 3 years and will be deploying for the first time next December. I have all sorts of things running through my mind right now. It's mainly about what I should be doing to prepare for this. Also, what sort of things should I expect.  And, not so serious, but how long does it take for mail to get to Afghanistan? Thanks so much for your help!

Re: DH deploying for first time...advice?

  • Next December? As in a year from now?

Make sure he has a will and all his other legal documents updated... JAGs can help you with that stuff.

If DH does the bill-paying, learn how to do it. In fact, get as much on autopay as possible. Make sure your name is on EVERYTHING- all utilities, all bank accounts, mortgage, etc. Most places will not accept a Power of Attorney, even though they should. That said, get as many Powers of Attorney as you can possibly expect to need, and then some. Is his car in your name, too? Consider that, or get a specific POA related to his car.

  • Hi and welcome.  My first bit of advice would be to click the link up at the top of the page and read up on OPSEC and PERSEC.  Also, there is a button in my siggy that will link you to the MN FAQ page.  There is a ton of info there that you may find useful.

Second, don't get stuck on the month you posted.  (BTW, you should take that out)  Dates change all the time.  My Reserve unit had 6 different sets of orders and dates come down before the final date.  Be prepared for the timeline to change a few times.

The only thing you can really do to prepare is make sure you have all your paperwork in order.  His unit will have times when they help him fill out insurance papers, power of attorney forms and other things.  Be sure he knows that you will need several different POAs.  If I were you, I would also go over a budget before he leaves.  What do y'all plan to do with the money he'll be making while he is gone?

As far as mail, it really depends on what base he'll be on.  H has been all over.  It typically takes 7-10 days.  It can take up to two weeks during busy times like the holidays.  It has taken as long as 3 weeks for him to get mail.  I always send a small package a few days before he leaves and wait to see how long it takes.  I'll send a few letters a week until he lets me know he got the first package.

  • If you don't have a job or kids, get a job to keep yourself busy.  It was one of the only things that kept me sane the 5 times MH has been deployed!!

And the advice about the bills and names on everything in a pp!  definately!!

Get a web cam for real time face time.
