Help me pick a charity

We (our family) started a tradition last year where we would donate to a charity at the end of the year and on birthdays. End of last year, it was the zoo. For my son's birthday we did Le Leche League. I often do American Red Cross or Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) for my birthday.

I need to pick another for this year and I think I would like to choose a local children's charity (though I am not set on local).  I am not interested in a religious organization.  Any ideas?  If you work for a nonprofit, now is the time to whore it out.

  • I actually work for a local non-profit, but instead I'm going to share something else that I found out about recently.. the Unique Home in India.  What this woman does is nothing short of amazing and the next time I donate money, this is where it will go.

  • Whoops, pressed post too soon.  Basically, in India this is this disgusting epidemic where they are killing off the female population because they dont want to pay dowrys to marry them off, etc.  They illegally do ultrasounds when women are pregnant and if they find out they are girls, they either abort them or kill the babies when they are born.  It's horifying.  This woman started a home where baby girls can be annonymously dropped off, and she raises them as if they were her own.  She houses about 60 girls ranging in age from birth to like 20.  She will not allow them to be adopted out for fear that they will be killed, harmed, etc.  This isnt the best description, but check out the website.
