when to move from crib to toddler bed?

Just curious at what age and why did you move your little one from the crib to a toddler bed?

any tips, pointers, and suggestions that will help this change?

thanks!

Re: when to move from crib to toddler bed?

  • My first son was right around 20-22 mos.  I know it was before he was 2.  Why did we do it?  I don't really know.  But, it worked.  We had zero problems with him staying in his toddler bed from the very start.  We did start with naps for a week or so, then started with night time too.  He thought it was pretty cool having a big boy bed.  We put a gate at his door so if he did get up in the middle of the night he wasn't roaming around everywhere and his room was baby proofed.

  • We moved T out of his crib at 18 months.  He was letting himself out of his crib anyway.  And had no problem with the toddler bed.  We made it big deal and tried to talk to him about it.

  • We took the front off Will's crib and did the "rails" when he was about 18 months.  At 27 months, we put him in a new room on a mattress on the floor.  We did the rails because he was trying to climb out.  We moved him to the new room because baby #2 was on the way, and we wanted to make sure Will didn't feel "kicked out" by the baby.  He transitioned really well.  We want to get him a mattress frame, but we're out of $$ to get one.  Will sleeps really well on a twin bed at grandma's house, and at grandpa's as well, so he'll be fine.

  • We moved N when she was 25 months.  She was fine in the crib, but I wanted to move her and give her plenty of time to acclimate to a new room before the baby came.  We moved her to a full size bed because we already had one and she was really easy.

  • We moved my son at 14 months and I feel that was a little too early.  He had been sleeping great in his crib with the front off and a guard rail on it.  When we moved to the toddler bed, we had several months of up at night and wandering, not wanting to go to bed.

  • Just moved from her crib to a twin sized bed this past week (18months). We did this only because she started hating her crib and would just cry when she was in it. I think she just needed more space. My only 'tip' is that I lay with her before she falls asleep for naps and bedtime, for now. I lay down and pretend to be asleep, even when she talks/pokes me/sings/etc. Tonight it took her a good 45 minutes to fall asleep, but I never gave in. After our traveling is done we'll start working on her falling asleep/staying in bed on her own.
