WTF IL rant

My IL's came over tonight for dinner to keep me company because DH is out of town.  FIL says he's not going to go near the kids because he has a mystery rash on his face.  I was like, "um, shingles?" to which he replied, "maybe - I'm not sure."

Seriously, who comes over if you think you might have shingles around a 3month old?!?  There was plenty of opportunity to call first.  I sent them home.  These are the same ones who just won't get the pertussis vaccine.  My husband is going to step in and say something the next time talks to them.

Re: WTF IL rant

  • Eek! Totally not okay. What's their reasoning for not getting the pertussis vax?
  • Woah.

    I mean....

    I got nothing.

  • Um this is like the time my SIL's mother hugged me and hung out with me when she had the puke viral thing while I was pregnant. I've never forgiven her.
  • good for you for sending them home!  i don't know if i would have been able to without dh being there (we have our own issues with the ils).  hopefully he is able to talk some sense into them.

that is just plain rude.  we had a kid at our christening with a fever.  not fair to that kid or anyone at the party.  i just don't understand why people think they should expose others to their germs unless its 100% unavoidable.  boo!

  • Oh, Mir that sucks!  Were they upset that you sent them home?

Even if you didn't have kids (and a new baby) I would expect someone would call  and say I think I might have shingles are you ok with me coming over, because I wouldn't want to hang out with someone with shingles at all.  I had them, I would NEVER want them again.

I try to avoid sick people at all costs but even more so now that I have a kid.

  • They handled being sent home really well.  She called later in the evening to make sure I was ok and told me they had discussed in the car on the way over not making a big deal if I didn't want them there.  Which thought process, to me, would lead to at least calling first.  But they're a little different.  I'm taking a different tack with the pertussis thing and telling them to get their tetanus booster b/c that's grouped with it. Tetanus was a "thing" for their generation, whereas pertussis and chicken pox seem to not be a "thing" for them like it is now for us.

  • Good for you for sending them home.  At least you were lucky and they took it well. If I would have done that, I probably would have started a battle for the ages.  I am just waiting to see the reactions I get about the booster.

  • That is just ridiculous! When I had shingles and we were scheduled to go over to DH's parent's house, I called them to let them know what was going on even though my doctor told me my case was mild and that I was not contagious. It's just common courtesy. I knew that they both had compromised immune systems due to illness and it was their decision if they wanted to take the risk to be around me. Not mine! So sorry that they put you in that situation. So not cool.

  • That is crazy.  I nearly lost my mind when a cw came into work with shingles while I was pregnant.  I was terrified because there wasn't anythiing I could do.  I had to be at work.  She got reamed out for knowingly coming in with them, which made me feel better.

Kudos to you for tossing them out on their heinies.

  • She is!

shingles bleh. burn them! burn them!
