Those that gift baking

Derek's going to be out of the house all weekend, so I thought this might be a good opportunity to get some holiday baking done.  Last year was my first year doing this, so I haven't really gotten a set pattern or method yet.

So, I ask you this, how much do you give to people?  How many different things do you make?

Also, I'm very sad, as I can't find my Martha Stewart Holiday Baking magazine from last year.  It had some reallllllly awesome recipes in it that I wanted to make again.  Boo.

Re: Those that gift baking

  • I've only given out sugar cookies before. I was struggling in college but still wanted to give my friends something so I made red and green crab shaped cookies to give to my friends. I gave them a big tin with around 10-14 large cookies in it.

My MIL always gives out cookies and she usually gives about 5 different types

Sugar, Chocolate chip, maybe chocolate chip with pecans, peanut butter balls, peanut butter thumbprints with a chocolate kiss in them. I think it's the variety that makes it work.

  • Last year I made 4 different things, I think, and ended up giving each person about 5 of each.

-Pink Peppercorn & Sea Salt Caramels

    -Raspberry Sandwich Cookie Pops

    -Peanut Butter Blossoms

-I can't remember for the life of me what else I made!

I'm debating if I'm going to be doing it again this year.  I really enjoyed it last year but this year has been crazy busy and I don't know if I will have the time/energy.

  • We just got a plate of cookies. They made Pistachio Sugar Cookies, Something they called a Minted Snowball that was heaven covered in coconut, Chocolate Mint Cookies, Chocolate Crinkles, Some amazing Peanut Butter cookie made in a mini muffin tin, and one more...  There were three or four of each in the package, and the tag had a list of all the cookies.  They were fun because they were all so different from what you'd normally make, and they were all delicious!  Benefits of being friends with a couple that has a baking business on the side! Yum!

  • My ILs always give a little tin full of cookies (different varieties).  They get the tins at the $1 store, they are prob like 5" in diameter.

I give my neighbors little bags with buckeyes with our xmas cards.  I guess I put like 6-8 in a bag.

I have.  Some of them are there, but others (like the ah-mazing Smoky Bacon Ginger Cookies) are not, though I have found them on blogs.  I was mostly just wanting to browse and gather inspiration.  I like hardcopies for that sort of thing.

It's good to have collections of ideas. I have the baking one from two years ago, and all the cookies look SO good.

  • We usually get requests now that people know what we make. I got some Chinese take-out containers with holiday prints on them at Michaels a few years ago and just stuff about 10 cookies in there with some fancy tissue paper.

  • I typically gift four different types of goodies to make sure there is plenty of variety. How much I put of each depends on how large the goodies are. For instance last year for co-workers with families of four, I included four peppermint crunch cupcakes, a cellophane bag full of peppermint bark, four large decorated snowflake sugar cookies, and eight chocolate pops. This year I'll be including 8 decorated chocolate pretzel rods, a dozen bite-sized butter cookies, 8 oreo truffles, and 4 mini cheesecake brownie bites.

Oooooo, that all sounds good.  I think I want to do pretzel rods too this year, mostly because, well, I really like them!

I love making pretzel rods because they're the easiest and there's an abundance of cute Christmas sprinkles out there. The butter cookies are my absolute favorite though. It's a variation of Paula Deen's butter cake in cookie form and oh. my. god. If anyone here wants the recipe I'd be happy to share it because everyone deserves to try one of those cookies at least once! Everything in this post sounds delicious, though. I wish we all lived closer so we could do an exchange!
