It may be a new disc issue. Try using an older disc that you own that you KNOW has worked before.
But no, I don't think a DVD can "crash" players permanently.

Just another freezing day in my office. Brr!
Samantha - I agree with Kat. Try another DVD that you know works. I often get scratched DVD's from Netflix and that is usually the reason for it not to play. Standard DVD players are not smart enough to have their firmware altered via disc. Even new blu-ray models require an Internet connection or thumb-drive for firmware updates.
