Moms with kids in daycare - poll
Re: Moms with kids in daycare - poll
DS is in a daycare that used to be close to home. Now that I've moved, it's kind of equally inconvenient to work and home.
But, for next year, I am very much hoping to get him into ECE close to home. Shortening up his commute will help us. Part of my thinking is, though, that I work downtown - and DS is older, so my considerations are a little more set towards school and making sure he's close in the neighborhood for friends, etc.
Smack in the center of the two - but really none of it is very far away from the others.

Yeah, I guess I kinda suck at polls
I am sure there are plenty of others who's daycare isn't really close to either. I am super excited that dd will literally be a 2 minute walk away, but kind of dreading the fact that since it is next to my work I will have to do all the drop off/pick up. Just hoping I am making the right decision.
This is our situation, too.
If I had to choose, I'd probably prefer to have daycare closer to home than work because DS doesn't like riding in the car, unless he's asleep, so I'd prefer to do the longer part of my commute without him.
DS (when he is born) will be going to daycare closer to home. It's not even on my way to work -- in fact, it's in the opposite direction. I'll be dropping off and DH will be picking up, and it's on DH's way home from work.
I looked at places that were close to work, close to home, and on the way to/from work & home. Then we settled on this place, and it just happened to be close to home. I could totally see the advantages to having it close to work though. If I could have afforded the place close to work, I probably would have went there.
We picked close to work. It's had some benefits--I like knowing they're close if something happens, I can pop over there for special events and to play with DD sometimes. I can use the carpool lane to work.
And it's fun to have that time to talk to DS on the way home.
Drawbacks: I do all pickup and dropoff. DH does it occasionally, but it's harder for him. If they were closer to home, I could drop them off if I was sick or wanted to work from home and that seems really convenient. Some car rides are looooong if one of the kids isn't feeling good or is unhappy about the ride.
I say see how it goes.
Katie Talks About...
Whoops, clicked closer to home, but actually it's closer to work.
I wouldn't have it any other way, though having both DH and I in the area helps with pick-ups/drop-offs, etc. and if only one of us was downtown, it would be harder.
Now that DS is talking, the time in the car is awesome, because I get to hear so much about his day and things he sees while we're driving, etc. that I don't think I would otherwise. Plus, I have to track my time hourly, and being able to walk out the door at 5 instead of 4:30 or earlier is nice. Plus I don't stress as much about crappy traffic across town to try and pick him up on time, he's already with me.
If you do decide to go this route, make sure to have snacks and a few toys in the car, and enjoy spending time with your child.
my read shelf:
I am definitely trying to look at the extra time in the car with her as a bonus. Even though we are driving, she is old enough now to have little conversations with me and I would rather spend that extra time with her than have her in daycare an extra 20 minutes. And yes right now I have to leave at 4:30 at the latest to get her by 5, if we switch I can work till 5 which my office sees as a huge bonus (my boss pretty much told me they were going to give me a raise if I changed her daycare, and they did!)
closer to home. in fact i drive slightly the opposite direction of work to get there. this is for 2 reasons:
1. I work in the ghetto
2. dh and I work in completely different parts of town and share drop off and pick up duties
plus sometimes we'll drop ds off when we aren't going to work

I'm looking forward to when DS starts hating the car less and talking more. Right now he's 1, and although he sleeps peacefully in the car on long trips, he tends to fuss and cry on short trips. Sometimes I get a glimpse of the future when he babbles happily in his car seat. I can't wait until this becomes the norm and his babbling becomes real words (though his own little language is pretty cute and funny).
DS's daycare is just a few minutes from home. While it would be more convenient for me to have him near work so I could stay at work later and get to him faster if he's sick, I now like the fact that he will be going to kindergarten and 1st grade with some of the kids in his class now.

Closer to home. Back when I was still on contract downtown and spent a good part of every day there, I wanted to know that on the days I was working from home that I didn't have to drive all the way across the metro area and back, two times.
Now work, home, day care are all within a mile and a half of each other on the same major street.
halfway between home and DH's work. I work in the opposite direction. If I do have to pick him up it takes me just over an hour in rush hour to get there
I'd love it to be close to work since I could come in and BF him, and see him. But since we work in opposite directions, we had to find something that worked and this seemed best.
