Hey, I'd like to talk about who may or may not be nominated for Oscars. Write me a pm. (I love talking about it but have very few people who care. My husband can only feign interest for so long.)
Also, give me a little more info about Tree of Life. I'm trying to decide if I want to rent it. Thanks!
At this point it seems like Best Pic is going to be The Artist or Descendants, but who knows?
ETA: I am just going to put my predictions here for the heck of it.
Actress: Streep, Davis, Williams, Close, Swinton (last spot could also be Mara, Theron, Dunst, or Olsen)
Actor: Clooney, DuJardin, Pitt, Fassbender, DiCaprio (Gary Oldman)
Supporting Actress: Spencer, Woodley, Bejos, Chastain, Redgrave McCarthy's listed as #3 on Gold Derby, but I can't believe they'd nominate her for Bridesmaids. Not the type of film that the Academy usually honors.
Supporting Actor: Plummer, von Sydow, Brooks, Branagh, Hill(?) Rickman's being mentioned for Harry Potter.
Director: Scorsese, Hazanavicius (sp?), Payne, Daldry, Spielberg

I think Young Adult will be eligible because it may have had or will be having a NY or LA premiere in time even if it doesn't go wide. There's been Oscar talk about Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. Oswalt was actually the runner-up for the LA Film Critics Supporting Actor.
I hope Viola Davis wins as well. I don't mind Meryl Streep but don't really want her to win her third... I don't think she's in the same category as Ingrid Bergman and shouldn't be within spitting distance of Katharine Hepburn. I'm very weird about things like that that don't even matter to normal people. Michelle Williams may be the Best Actress spoiler.
Do movies just need a release somewhere in 2011 to count? If so I thought I saw Young Adult being released somewhere this week.
I haven't yet seen hardly anything likely to be nominated. Last year I saw all the best picture nominees, so this year I'm going to try to exceed that.
Yes, as long as its released into even 1 theater in the calendar year, it is eligible. I know Disney did something last year to try and boost the numbers in the Animated Feature category by releasing the latest Tinker Bell movie into one theater in LA so it could be eligible.
I too will try and see all the major category nominees at the least (Picture, Actor/Supporting, Actress/Supporting, Director, both Writing). As far as buzzy movies I've seen The Descendants, The Help, Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Ides of March, and Bridesmaids. I'll be seeing Melancholia tomorrow night, yay. Looking forward to the future discussions.
my read shelf:
Malick for director.
Tree of Life was possibly the most beautiful movie that I've ever seen. I'm not sure how it will translate on the small screen though - it demands the full movie theater experience. Mr. Insom watched it on his laptop!! I was horrified. lol
Not so. To quote Mr. Sheen, I'm WINNING!!!

There's a kid in my class who loves to quote that.(7th grade)
Yes, I'd love to see that link. I get on Gold Derby all the time, so my good picks are really the culmination of many months of reading it.
You guys and your insider websites... lol
I go on my gut.
Just like my mentor Stephen Colbert.
