Home Security Systems?

My contract with ADT is up in January - I pay about $38/mo plus I have to keep a landline.  I've never had any issues in my neighborhood, but I like having the system for peace of mind...  Are there any systems that have a better monitoring fee or wireless monitoring?  What kind of recommendations can you ladies give?

 TIA!

Re: Home Security Systems?

  • Ours is with Vivint & we love it. It is all wireless - we have the panel which is touchscreen & very easy to use (even my 5 yr old can set it), and then it is also wirelessly connected to our thermostats as well as our door locks. That way you can manage it all from the panel, or from a phone app. They even have some sort of fancy pantsy thing that you can have video monitoring - it's more expensive & I just didn't think it was worth it for us, but it's kind of cool.

Their customer service is AMAZING, truly - as in I have written a letter to thank them for their help. Once when my husband was out of town our old system in our old house was misbehaving b/c a sensor was broken & every night it would get jacked up. (Of course scaring me to death, home alone with my kids.) It was just a problem with the hardware - they sent people out twice to work on it & I literally would be on the phone for 45 minutes trying to work on it - they could not have been more helpful in a difficult situation.

All in all, I would highly, highly recommend them.

  • PS. It's all cellular, no landline.
  • We have SEI and we do have a landline, but it was $23 and is going up to $25 or $27 (can't remember) next month.  To do wireless, you do need something addtional installed to transmit the signal, we just have a landline.

Edit:  We have SEI, not ADT.

How much do you pay a month? I would love all the wireless stuff!

We used to have Monitronics -- we moved and just haven't switched it over (you get one free move - all new equipment to equal what you had at your previous address). I think it was $34/month, and they were really good. I had the alarm set to silent, and when we first got it, I forgot to turn it off before letting dogs out... I didn't hear my phone when I was in the shower, and they had the police at my house less than 10 minutes after I let the dogs out!

  • It is in tiers, and we have the middle tier which includes the wireless thermostats hooked up (they call it "home management" or some such thing). I want to say it's around $60. I am honestly not positive but I could look through my bank account to double check. Thankfully all the equipment was free & no charge for installation, even.

They brought 2 yard signs with solar lights. Possibly my favorite thing ever. (me = geek)

  • We have had SEI for about six years now, and have nothing but excellent things to say about them.

We pay $24/month with a landline.  There are other options, but when we first met with the rep, he wasn't completely sold on wireless, for whatever reason (I think it was relatively new at that point).  Plus, I love having a home phone.  We talked about doing a wireless system at our new house, but because it was an existing home, they said they'd have to cut through the drywall in numerous places - not worth it to us.

We also have the garage feature, which is my favorite.  We can't arm the house if our garage doors are open.  So, we could never leave our garage doors open when we go to bed/leave.

While they were installing the system at our new house, one of the guys dropped his drill on our stainless steel (and expensive!) trash can - they replaced the trash can without any hesitation, which I thought was great.  :)
