One quick question ladies
I've been married about 3 months and I don't know many of the Army's acronyms. When my husband and I are together I don't think he talks about work because he doesn't like explaining everything to me a million times, therefore our conversations are short and irrelevant. Any suggestions on helping fill our communication gap so we can actually build a fulfilling marriage?
Re: One quick question ladies
Well, that's not very nice of your husband.
Lurk around here, we use lots of acronyms, meet up with some of the military spouses in your community, and try to get acquainted with your FRG. A lot of the lingo is learned as time goes on.
You might also consider trying a book like this: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/intro-to-army-life-allison-mewes/1036921872?ean=9781612060262&itm=5&usri=army+spouse I know our BX and clothing sales sell similar books, so you may want to check there.
H doesn't explain things to me because he assumes I know them, or forgets that I don't know the details of his job. Are you sure he's not talking about work because he thinks you're not getting it? Maybe it's that he's a newlywed and wants to talk about other things?
I ditto Ojo's suggestions. I can't tell you how I figured things out about the MC, because I just started reading/watching everything related to them, which is something you can do, or not, since if you're not in love 4ever with the Army it could be boring. I do think it is important for partners to have a basic understanding of each other's day to day (military or no), so I'd really just let him know you're interested if you haven't already.
I think there might be some general lingo somewhere in the FAQ link in my siggy. I can tell with DH's job, though, that it's doesn't help at all. His job has an entire vocabulary associated with it, that even as someone training to be the civilian equivalent I often do not understand.
What helps is for us to figure out what major items of discussion might come up and find a way of relating them to me on my own level. For example, to me there is no nuclear reactor, but there is a radioactive hamster in a giant wheel and anything to do with the reactor needs to be explained to me in terms of the hamster or his wheel.
Otherwise, I really encourage DH to discuss more of the interpersonal things that happen and fewer of the technical things.
