Last night the vet said she heard a heart murmur and arrhythmia in my 7 year old cat. She said they would not put him under anesthesia to pull the tooth he needs out unless he goes to a cat cardiologist first, because they would be afraid he wouldn't wake up. She gave me a brochure and told me to think about it. My options are to 1. wait a couple of months and bring him back, he could have just been stressed out 2. get a second opinion 3. take him to the cardiologist ($$$). If money were no object I would absolutely spend thousands to make my pet better, but we have many new house expenses and my parents just broke up with this same vet for a couple of reasons, one being they seem to charge more for everything, so that is where my hesitancy comes from. I am kind of worried about his tooth (he has a cavity that she said could be painful) but he's definitely still eating and not acting one bit sick... I know they are good at hiding pain, but I have seen him in pain before and there isn't even a hint. I'm thinking about options 1 or 2, but WWYD?

Re: Cat owners come in
Sorry you are going through this!
I'd get a second opinion. I live in B'more also, and have recommended my vet to a few friends that have told me they're very happy with his "bedside" manner, price and honesty. His name is Dr. Trujillo at Light Street Animal Hospital.
I would definitely get a second opinion. I know what you mean about the $$$. One of our kitties has diabetes and it's been a lot of money in vet bills and medicine.
If you do get the tooth out, our vet offers dental services in February at a discount. I am pretty sure it's part of a whole pet dental month program, that maybe your vet would also participate in. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I would get a second opinion.
Do you use Feliway diffusers or spray? They are calming pheramones. Going to the vet is very stressful for most kitties, so try spraying your carrier before you put kitty in it.
We use Carney Animal Hospital and have been very happy with them. Their prices are reasonable and they are awesome if you have more than one pet in terms of not charging you an arm & a leg to bring more than one in at a time. We see Dr. Andrew. He does a great job and our 2 newest boys who are skittish and freak out easily like him.

Even if money was no object I would still get a second opinion. I know it's a bit of a drive for you, maybe 20-25 min from the city but we love Mountainside Vet- http://www.mountainsidevet.com/
A lot of our adopters go there because they see all of our MABB fosters and everyone says they love him. They're also extremely reasonable. I just had to take my senior boston to get two drains removed from his face, staples removed (he got jumped while we were on a walk), new ear infection medicine, and his nails cut and with the exam fee it was $45. They have a lot of really great vets on staff, Dr. K is my favorite but I'd see any of them.
I would tell them.
