New Boss Vent

I have a new boss, and have been trying to keep an open mind about him despite some warning signs, but had two things happen today that cement I don't really care for him.

First, he told me that every time he leaves his office and walks past mine (my office is next to his) that he looks at my computer monitor to see what I am working on. Indifferent And that "perception is reality" and his perception, and thus reality, was that 70% of the time, I'm on Facebook. This couldn't be further from the truth. I'm not a huge Facebooker, I often go weeks without going on there. Also, the nature of my job involves a fair amount of Internet research, so it's common for me to be on the Internet frequently.

Secondly, I've had a bunch of doctor's appointments lately, and he also told me he's noticed this, but "won't hold it against me." WTF?

Re: New Boss Vent

  • Yikes, that's not good. Did you tell him he must be mistaken because you never use facebook?

I did, and I reiterated that I must do Internet research a lot and if he saw me online I was not on Facebook, and that's when I got the "perception is reality" comment.

  • ugh. he sounds like an asshat. i think the comment about doctor's appointments is completely inappropriate (and disrespectful) and if there's someone that you trust to express that concern to, i probably would. i'm really sorry. i've been in a similar spot and it sucked @ss.

  • I have a bit of experience with bad bosses.  The one thing I've ALWAYS been horrible at but ALWAYS look back and realize I should have done:  document.  Seriously.  Before it gets any worse.  I know everyone says it, but if I can spare you any of the headaches I've had trying to deal with my bosses, it is worth repeating.  Document everything he says to you.  Even if it's not noteworthy at the time, it may be part of a pattern.  And talk to someone about this. Maybe just a heads up to HR.

I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this.  Bad bosses have literally caused physical symptoms for me, so I know this can be a tough thing to deal with.

  • what a douchebag.

can you ask to be transferred to a different department, before things get too bad?  i mean, if you were up for employee of the year, it would be in their best interest to keep you around.

nevermind my comment about giving him 3-6 months leeway.  this kind of crap never gets better.

  • Whoa, the doctors appointment thing is away inappropriate. If you mention that to hr, I imagine (if they're responsible and even slightly worried about ADA, FMLA) they will make that stop.

He does sound like an asshat. Can you call him over a few times when he's walking by and show him what you're looking at? Like "hey bOSS, since you're passing by, look at this (non-fb) article that relates to x project."

  • My husbands old work had video cameras set up so his bosses could view everything people were doing at all times.  Very big brother there.  They also had the ability to click in and view what was on your computer monitor if they wanted.

Ahhh! That is crazy. Did all the employees know that was the case? That seems illegal although I guess it's not.

This is the case at almost any company.  Even if they can't remote in realtime, they can certainly see what websites you've visited.

  • I'm sorry. That totally sucks. I had a boss that like that and it's so demeaning and disrespectful. For me, it actually made me have less motivation. Now I have an awesome boss who's encouraging, flexible, treats me with respect, etc., and I always want to do whatever I can to do the best job possible for him. It's just sad when people have no clue how to manage and they end up getting the opposite result of what they want.

  • It's was a graphic design company so everyone was always on the computer and yes everyone knew they were being watched that way.  I'm so glad DH has a new job now.
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this.

I literally kept a notebook of everything my old boss did so that I could use it against her later. Fortunately, my company has anonymous "upward feedback" reviews where we can review the performance, ethics, etc., of our management?and it goes to their bosses. She got in big doo-doo because of little old me (and others on my team). Entries included "after harping to me about "admin time," she sent me five DC vacation rentals to research for her personal vacation?during work hours" (she lived in Denver?note: I am not her personal assistant or anything even remotely close) and "denied my 4-day summer vacation that I submitted 11 months in advance with no reason given."

    Good luck. Confused
