Tell me about Croatia

I have an opportunity to go to Croatia next fall, but because I have some additional traveled planned for next year and early 2013, I'm back and forth about going (and getting the time off from work). I've been reading up on Croatia, but I'd love to hear about your experiences there. Love it? Hate it? Why? What did you do there? (And have you been there in the fall? Is that a good time to go?)

Re: Tell me about Croatia

  • DH and I went in Oct 2008.  I've got some basic info and a link to my pics here http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/60862633.aspx

We loved it but I have "family" over there so we didnt have to deal with being a "tourist" since we had locals showing us around.

  • I went about 2 years ago and loved it! We went in May and the weather was perfect. It had a lot of what I pictured what the Italian Riviera to be without all the crowds. We flew into Venice and look an overnight boat right down to Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik was an awesome city.

We also spent some time at Plitvice Lakes National Park and took side trips into Bosnia and Montenegro.

  • We were there in Oct 2009 after spending Sep in other parts of Eastern Europe.

I loved it, DH is part Croatian, but we didn't visit family. You can see where we went on my blog here

  • I have been to Plitvice and Split and loved them both. We went at the end of November, and we had nice weather. Not beach weather, of course, but pleasant for walking around.

  • I went to Croatia two months ago (in October). We were on a cruise, and we stopped in Dubrovnik for a day. LOVED it! It was the cutest little fishing village. I could've spent a whole week there. Cute restaurants, bars, shops, and it's gorgeous too. Definitely walk the walls and take in the medieval feel of everything. The weather was nice - definitely needed a light jacket or long sleeves though.
  • I've been to Croatia twice - in 2003 and 2007.  There were far more tourists in 2007 and I suspect it has gotten even more popular as a travel destination since then so I'd recommend going during shoulder season (May or Sept/Oct).  I've been during both of those times and the weather was great.  We rented a car and drove from the southern end of Croatia all around finally ending up in Zagreb, stopping along the way in all the places mentioned above and then some (Dubrovnik, Split, Plitvice, Trogir, Karlovac to name a few).  It's a wonderful country - beautiful, nice people, good food and lots of things to do.  You can spend time on the islands if you like the water, or visit the old cities, or go to the national park and hike.  If you find that you have time, I would suggest looking into side trips to neighboring countries like Slovenia, Montenegro or Bosnia. I've traveled to nearly all of the former republics of Yugoslavia and enjoyed all of them.
