So we've been looking for a car for awhile. Finally found a car that we agreed on (Certified used, newer, good mileage) and I've been dealing with the sales rep all day. He finally calls back and says that we got approved but the finance company is requiring additional warranties to approve the loan, which bumped the price up (from the base price without tax/fees) $3,000. I have never heard of this and it seemed fishy, so I told him I'd call him back. I called the bank that we got approved through and asked the rep there and he said he's never heard of anything like this. I then googled the crap out of it and found this.
I'm so frustrated. Why do people think they can do this? Now how do I tell this stupid sales rep that we will not be purchasing any extra warranties on the car and we want the car for the advertised price (obviously plus tax/fees). I would love to just take our business elsewhere, but we already had a bad experience with another dealership and I actually really like this car.
Re: I really hate dealing with car salespeople
What do you mean HOW do you tell them? You just tell them!
You've clarified it with your bank and you've done your research on this "scam", so stand your ground and don't let them screw you. Or take your business elsewhere if they keep insisting that this is "required".
I guess I know how to tell them.. I just.. hate confrontation. I think I'm just so frustrated they (try to) do this to people.
ETA: I also don't think they're going to back down that easy.
"Hey, guy. I just wanted you to know I talked to our bank about the extended warranty and I'm on to your con. I realize you work for commision and probably get some kind of kick back from the warranty company every time you lie and force people to purchase one for their car. I'd like to sit down with you and your general manager and discuss this issue and the price that we had originally agreed upon for the car. If you'd like to make this sale, you'll get on that ASAP. If not, I'm willing to walk away and find a different car at another dealership. Thanks."
Can you tell I come from a family of car salesmen?
Yeah pretty much that exactly.
FTR, I don't think extended warranties are a bad thing to purchase, especially for a used car. But the fact that this guy lied to you and tried to make you think you had no choice is ridiculous.
Oh I don't think they're bad either. Part of the reason we are kind of set on a certified used car is because it has the extended warranty already. I also found out USAA offers extended warranties at a lot less. Plus it's still under factory warranty. It just doesn't make sense.
I'm nervous his manager is in on it too, thought I'm thinking about calling a manager tomorrow.
Don't forget that businesses that use unfair or illegal practices on service members are subject to being blacklisted by the base. If this dealership is close to the base or relies on service members as it's main customer base, being blacklisted would almost certainly put them out of business.
I would tell the dealership that you are onto their scam and will be reporting them.
Also, I couldn't tell from your other post, but I would also call this deal off and start looking elsewhere for cars. Any place that tries to scam you like this doesn't deserve your business, and will only be more trouble in the future. You're best bet is to go to another dealership and insist that you will be using your own financing.
I know, I hate it too, it sucks. And I seriously despise sleazy car sales people, I think iluvmytxrgr had some great advice though as far as what to say. Let us know what happens, don't be a doormat for this slime ball.
