Telling your employer you're looking for a different Job...

Hi ladies!

I am normally on the military board, but i thought i might have better luck here..

So my question is, how would you go about telling your current employer that you are looking for a different (better) job? I obviously want to tell them before my hopeful employer calls to ask about me..but I am not sure what I should be saying. ?

  • You shouldn't tell them. They may fire you on the spot. Instead, find other references and write down on your applications not to contact your current employer OR that your current employer may only be contacted after an offer has been extended. That's when you'd tell your employer.

    The only times I would condone telling your employer are 1) if your site is closing/you're getting laid off and it's expected that you'll be job hunting (It happened to me) or 2) it's for an internal position and you are required to tell your boss.

    Clarify with the potential employer that they won't contact your current one unless/until you have an offer.

  • Agreed - you don't. The job I just applied to asked if they could contact my current job. I provided other references at that job but not my direct supervisor.
  • Don't tell your current employer.  If they don't fire you then, they could easily make your life miserable at work.  Plus, they may start looking for your replacement, and you don't end up quitting....then they may look for reasons to get rid of you as well.

  • You don't tell them, and don't use them as a reference if you don't want them to know about it. You are not obligated to give them anything more than two weeks notice and for the sake of all parties involved, it's better to not give them any more than you have to. Even if you are on very good terms with your current job, and may even consider some or all of them to be friends, two weeks notice is the best way to go. I recently went through a job change and I was on very good terms with everyone in the office that I was leaving, including management. It was awkward and uncomfortalbe enough having to give my two weeks. Imagine how much more uncomfortable it would be to have to deal with that awkwardness longer than you have to.
    So happy to be married to my best friend.
