Time's Person of the Year

"The Protester"  what do you think?  If you don't agree, who would you put on this issue's cover?

Re: Time's Person of the Year

  • I haven't read any coverage about this, but I think this is a good pick.  What has been happening in the Middle East -- Egypt in particular -- has really been amazing.
  • I agree with the choice in a way, but part of me wishes they'd stick to picking an actual person.  I know they've done groups a few times, but it seems like they've done it a lot recently.

I just looked up on Wiki and it looks like we had:

    Whistleblowers (2002)

    American Soldier (2003)

You (2006) - Worst one ever.

    Protestors (2011)

So they've definitely gone to groups more in the past decade, and I prefer to have a person but see the importance of each of these.

This was my thought as well.

I would be interested to read this cover story and see how Occupy Wall Street is discussed.

  • I think that when they started naming groups as a "person" it made the job easier for them.  Juli, I agree with you on the single person thing.

But wow, the power of a group of people standing up for what they believe in has changed the world this year.  Maybe not as much in our little country...  Occupy protesters seem to be a part of the article, too.

  • GRsp - Don't forget the Aquinas protesters. They are still out there!

What?... Who are the Aquinas protesters?  Not part of Occupy Grand Rapids?

Oh no - not Occupy Grand Rapids. There are 2-3 people holding up a "Shame on Aquinas" sign. Union issues, I believe, but I don't know the specifics. They have been protesting for the past 2 years

Same people who have, in the past protested various hospitals in the area and the arena.  The "special" thing about the Aquinas protesters is that I caught them ogling a young woman while standing for justice.

  • Ah, yes.  They were in front of the Amway Hotel yesterday.

Honestly?  I think it's weak and lame.  Do I have a better suggestion?  No.  But I'm not getting paid to publish a magazine either.
