Putting two weeks notice in at new job

I just started a new job at a grocery store in the customer service department a little over a month ago. I have worked customer service for over 10 years but this has got to be the most stressful and frustrating job I've had. I have come home crying several times, not only because of the customers but also because of the lack of training and coworkers.

I got an email this morning for another position this morning hat is something I could actually use my college degree doing. I will be making twice the amount of money and Is something that I would enjoy so much more. I have an interview on Friday and I'm really crossing my fingers that I get it. I would start at the beginning of January after the holidays.

Question is if I get the job, I feel like I don't want to give my two weeks notice I would rather quit, 1 because I still have to pay my union dews and if I stay for those two weeks I'll have to pay them, second I'll have to work over the holidays, and third I haven't been there long enough to even bother putting them as a reference.

Crappy thing is, its the grocery store I will shop at if I end up leaving, we live in a small town and only have a few grocery stores.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT! :)

Re: Putting two weeks notice in at new job

  • Normally I'd say to just quit without notice since you won't be using it for a resume

    BUT

Since you're from a small town, it may come back to haunt you- I'm also from small-town America and everybody knows everybody.

  • Can you just give a weeks notice or even a few days?
  • Be professional and put in your 2 weeks notice. You'll be there on a regular basis, and word could get around that you handled this unprofessionally.

It will take the edge off of those 2 weeks if you know you have another job to go to.

Not to mention you're putting the cart before the horse.

  • I feel like if you've only been there a month it is acceptable to give one weeks notice.
  • I agree with giving the two weeks notice, being professional about it. You never know if it will come back to haunt you in the future.

Also, as the person I just interviewed with told me - most jobs will tell you not to bother coming back if you give you notice (he told me I was welcome to start early if that was the case).

  • Yeah, I'm w/ the others.  Put in your 2 weeks notice.  You dont' want to burn bridges in a small town.

ETA: Especially a it is the holidays, if you just up and quit w/ no notice- you may REALLY screw over some of the other employees who end up having to come in when they would have had off to cover for you.

  • I agree with PPs.  I used to work for a small town grocery store.  It always worked out better if you gave notice.  The store may just cut your hours or let you go earlier than the two weeks anyways.

  • I also wanted to add that it may reflect negatively on you to your new employer that you are so ready to drop the job without notice. It doesn't send a good message.

I hadn't thought of this, but totally agree.  Put in the notice... even if you aren't worried about burning bridges, think of how it'd feel to the person who now has to come in on Christmas Eve when they'd planned to be off.

  • UPDATE!

I had the interview this morning and got a call an hour later to offer the position. I am starting right away which means I have decided to give my current job at the grocery store a weeks notice to finish out the week I am scheduled for and end the job next Thursday. I am not expecting to get a recommendation from the grocery store anyways since I have only been there a month. Most of the people don't even know my name there anyways, I'm just another person filling in a spot.

What do you guys think of that decision?

  • Personally I think you should put the two weeks notice and deal with it over the holidays.  That's what I'd do b/c it may come back to bite you later, I realize it's not going on a resume but people talk, expecially in a small town!  Better safe than sorry is my thought.
  • I would assume that when you gave notice your boss would have let you know if they really needed you for two weeks rather than one. If they asked you to stay longer, then I would have, but otherwise I think its fine in this situation. There were a few times when I gave notice at minimum wage jobs and my boss said they appreciated that I gave any notice rather than just not showing up one day like most people.
  • Update: Put in a one weeks notice, the assistant manager was snooty to me the rest of the night. I am glad I only have 2 days left now because I don't think I would want to deal with that for 2 weeks. The rest of the people I work with said "good for you" a few even told me that they would be doing it soon as well.
