Resume dates - opinions?

I got laid off in mid-August. Although the rest of my resume just has years (no months) as dates, I decided to put 2005-August 2011 for my current job, because I felt like just putting 2011 could make it look like I'd been unemployed for a while.

Well, it's been nearly 4 months now, and I still haven't gotten a job. I'm thinking of just reverting back to 2011 as the end of my last position. Any thoughts or does it not really make a difference either way?

Re: Resume dates - opinions?

  • Not sure why having 2011 would make it seem like you were unemployed for a while.

I don't think the addition of a month is what's keeping you from finding a job. Have you had anyone look over your resume in general?

  • I think it depends on what makes sense.

I have months and years on my resume becuase I ended a job on 12/23/07 year and started my new job on 1/2/08.  I didn't want it to look like there was a long gap because I ended my old job in one year and started my new job the next year.  It was literally a 9 day gap due to the holidays and previosuly scheduled plans on my part and the new employer's part.

My friend uses years on her resume because she started a job in September and the company went out of business and she ended in November.  She didn't want to call out that she was only at the job for 2.5 months.  She explains it in an interview--that the company went out of business, but she didn't want it to disqualify her or raise red flags and have it look like she was terminated for non-performance.  In our state, it is much easier to get rid of an employee during their first 90 days of employment.

I think you should do what makes sense for your history.

Because I was thinking if I put 2011, it could look like I was unemployed as early as January of 2011 and therefore  had a longer unemployment gap.

It hasn't been an issue, as I've had a few interviews and most people just ask about why I'm no longer with the company over the phone (and I've also gotten an offer, but turned it down). But as the gap grows, I'm just starting to wonder what makes the most sense.

I think the idea of you putting August 2011 is good. I see your point, you want to eliminate as much skepticism as possible.

  • On my resume I always put the month and year to month and year for when I was employed by each company.
