storing milk ?

a couple of you said to lay the bags flat to freeze.  I could have sworn that I heard/read that laying flat to freeze could cause leakage/breaking on thaw.  did I make that up?

Re: storing milk ?

  • Hmm... I haven't heard that, but I have had a few bags leak while thawing, so we thaw in a small tupperware in the fridge to catch any milk that might leak. Maybe if you overfilled the bag, it could break?

    Lansinoh says:

What is the best way to store these-in another bag, in Tupperware container, freezer bag?

We recommend laying the storage bags flat to freeze them. You can put the breastmilk storage bags directly into the freezer but because plastic can sometimes stick to the freezer rack (especially if it is even slightly wet), we recommend placing the bags in some type of container or even a freezer Ziploc bag. That will also protect the bags from knocking together with other frozen items.

  • Flat in the freezer for us also.  It was easier to organize and I also double bagged - lansinoh bag into a big freezer bag that held a lot of other milk bags.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • Flat at our house also.  I would put them in a shallow gladware thing to freeze, once frozen move it to a gallon sized zip lock that then held 50oz each (easy way to know how much I had).  When I went to thaw them I would put them in a gladware container also - I nearly cried the first time I opened the fridge the next moring to find milk all over because the bag had a pinhole (at least if it's in a container I could still use it).

  • Flat for us, too.

I read awhile ago on the breastfeeding board a great way to store the bags once they're frozen.  Use a gift bag and cut a little slit at the bottom to pull the bags out.  So you can put new bags in the top and use the older ones first.  Genius!  Like this.

this is what we do too.

Never had one leak or break. But, I don't unthaw them in the bags though, I break/cut it apart frozen and put it in the bottle. At daycare they use a bottle warmer to unthaw.  Then it's not getting warmed up twice (vs. unthawing in the bag to put it in the bottle, then being placed in the fridge until he's ready for it to be warmed up by the bottle warmer). Granted, our daycare requires all bottles to be completely prepared, so I can't just give them frozen bags.

  • Yup, frozen flat. I only had one bag leak while thawing, but I put it in a cup like PPs to catch it just in case. I think I read it is more likely to break if you put the warm milk straight into the freezer without cooling it in the fridge first.

  • I have a follow up question.  I feel like such a newb but I've never had enough milk for a stash before.  Do you guys usually put whatever you happened to pump into a bag or do you collect a few sessions so that you can have equal increments?

  • I lay mine flat to freeze in my freezer attached to my fridge.   Then once frozen, I put a bunch of them into a big ziploc bag and put that into my chest freezer.

I will say that the Lansinoh bags lay flat better than the Medela ones, so a little easier to store.

Loving that gift bag idea though!

  • I store whatever I happen to pump.

and I'm loving the gift bag idea too - I mean really, what else am I going to do with the million baby boy gift bags I have??

  • LOVE the gift bag idea.

I used to put whatever I pumped in a bag, since that was about equivalent to one feeding (and once milk is thawed you have a time limit for how long it will keep). Now, I tend to leave fresh milk for the babysitter, and if I have extra, I will divide it into about 5 ounce portions and freeze that (since sometimes I only pump and ounce or two).

  • I don't know if this is the "right" way or not, but I would refrigerate all the milk I pumped until the end of the day then I would freeze it in 6oz portions (since that is the most DD ever drank in one sitting)

  • I would usually keep all the milk from the day and freeze in 4 oz portions (since that is the amount my son would usually drink.)  I always labled the bag w/ the # of ozs though in case they varried a bit.
  • All of this is so helpful!  I have a ridiculous stash going right now.

  • I pump and store in 6 oz increments. I've done the gift bag idea and it works really well!
