Wine and Pregnancy

I know a few friends who will drink the occasional glass.

What's your / your doctor's opinion on this?

Re: Wine and Pregnancy

  • My Dr opinion = no.

My opinion = a small glass in moderation.

I have not had one though.  I don't want a small glass :)

  • The doctors at my office were split on the issue. However, I feel like it is better to be safe than sorry, personally. I wouldn't judge someone for having -a- glass. Same with sushi and cold deli meats. Whatev.
  • I have definately gone against Dr's orders and had Publix Boars Head roast beef.  It was a matter of life or death though.

  • My Dr. says no alcohol, period.
I want a big F'in margarita, not a glass of wine.

I'm not going to lie, I am looking to my first pp dry Kettle One martini with 3 olives.

  • I think anything in moderation is fine.  I had a few 1/4 or 1/2 glasses here and there with meals.  Not regularly.  At the end of the day, if anything was wrong with DD, I didn't want to feel guilty about it being a result of my bad decision to have a full glass of wine.

  • A small glass here and there is not going to cause fetal alcohol syndrome.  I think most doctors will tell you to avoid it entirely because they have to be careful with liability.  I don't blame them.  I had maybe three drinks the entire time I was pregnant with DS.  I can understand why some people feel more comfortable avoiding it entirely.  On the flip-side, I felt comfortable with my consumption level.  To each her own.
  • I had a couple 1/2 glasses of wine while pregnant.  I never got my Dr's opinion though.

But I also ate cold deli meat and had caffeine.... all in moderation though :)

  • im not a wine drinker so I have no reason to ask my doctor but if I was I think I will avoid it just to be safe than sorry. I am a hard liqour drinker lol so yeah I have to stay away for a while lol. However, I do eat hotdogs, some deli meat at times, and corn beef from a can hahah, in moderation of course.

  • I didn't even ask my doctor's opinion because I didn't plan to drink. I love my wine but hey, it's only 9 months. Whatevs. If I feel so compelled I may have a glass of champagne on NYE, but we'll see. I don't have any problem if a pregnant woman wants to have a glass here and there, but for me personally, I'm a huge worrier and put myself in the "better safe than sorry" camp, even if I think it probably really is okay.

I also don't eat deli meat, even though there's such a small chance of it being bad. No raw sushi and no steaks as red in the middle as I usually like them. I guess I'm a pregnancy food prude.

I do drink the occasional small glass of pop. Living on the edge!

Me too...towards the end of my pregnancy I had high blood pressure. A 1/2 glass actually helped it a bit.

  • My doctor was okay with the occasional glass.

The problem for me, at least with DS, was I would look so forward to that very occasional glass for a special occassion, but then I'd take one sip and have the world's worst heartburn and not be able to drink it anyways. Then I'd just be extremely disappointed. So I just advoided it all together.

Heartburn wasn't an issue with DD, and I had a little bit of wine here and there, but usually it just left me wanting more, so I rarely bothered.

Nope.  It's all coke.  Then you go from there.  Sprite.  Dr. Pepper. Etc.

  • I thought that I would have an occasional glass before I got pregnant. When it came down to it, I couldn't do it. I would forever blame myself is there was something wrong with her. My doctor wouldn't give a solid yes or no on the issue.

    Yes! Backup, yay! :)

Chelsea - that's exactly how I feel and why I haven't had any wine. I'm sure it's okay and I always thought I'd have a glass or two, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

  • While my Dr. said that in moderation it is OK, I couldn't have just one glass of one or just one beer so I've avoided them.  I told H that after DS is born I want beer and sushi!
