Hello ladies,
I'm not sure what to do with the family situation.
My IL's have an Xmas eve dinner/celebration (at the aunt's house)and my mom and sister are usually invited. My mother is now dating this guy "Joe". Frankly, I really don't want to ask IL's if Joe can come. They will say "yes". Joe is a nice enough guy, but he tells the same 3 stories over and over and has really bad manners (he sets his teeth in a napkin on the table!) Dh and I were looking forward to a few Joe-free hours during our trip. (We are staying at my mom's for 3 or 4 nights and Joe does not live with her, but is pretty much at her house all of the time.)
To make matters a bit more complicated, we are driving from my mom's house to the airport (1.5 hour trip) and then back to IL's (which is only about 1 hour from the airport). So either we take my mom to the airport with us and then go to the party or Joe has to take her. My mother won't be able to drive herself - she seems to get lost easily and I think we are starting to see signs of early dementia. FWIW, whenever we are in a large crowd of people she seems to be withdrawn and no participating or paying attention to the conversation.
So would you
1) take mom to the airport with everyone and tell her that Joe is not invited
2) Not tell mom or Joe that they are invited, i.e. Mom, we're going to IL's for Xmas
3) Something else?
Thanks!
Re: WWYD - family situation
#2, since I presume you are going to have quality time with your mom while you are staying at her house
Our situation is slightly similar... long story short, we spend Christmas Eve with my parents and Christmas Day with his... but his family has started becoming regulars at my parents on Christmas Eve as well, so they are getting double time and I'm spending half my time playing hostess to my ILs and not catching up with my extended family. It's more relaxing for us (maybe mostly for me, haha) to just let each family have their own time.
I don't have an answer for you, but you win for this ^^^
Maybe you could buy Joe a teeth holder for Christmas?
He'd probably just lose it...
