Your replies to my BF'ing post made me feel a million times better.

Today has been a better day and I am focusing on the positive (like that she slept 8 hours last night :))

Thank you to everyone that responded to my post, I really appreciate your support

Um, yeah, that's a HUGE positive!!  I am glad you are feeling better.  I read your post on my phone last night and didn't have the patience to reply.  We had to supplement dd with formula for her first few days also, and it was hard to do, but she ended up nursing just fine for almost 9 months.  It does get better.  And hoooray for sleep, that is awesome!

  • I think the best BFing advice I got was from a LC that said "get through the first 2 weeks and you've made it". I seriously had to take it one moment at a time until it got easier (my hurdles were having my milk take too long to come in, thrush - twice, and not producing enough during pumping). Now it's a piece of cake - so hang in there!

  • I hate to be a kill joy, but I'm fairly certain you're supposed to wake them up at night for the first two weeks to eat unless otherwise told by your pediatrician.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.

I don't think so Pixy.  Your ped might have said that, but a lot of caregivers and peds understand that babies can randomly STTN for the first few weeks after birth.  It's part of that "fourth trimester" time and is pretty rare, but much more common in the first week after birth.  Both my boys slept for 5-7 hour stretches at night during their first couple weeks.  Not always the same night, but several times during the first few weeks.  However, I've never known a kid that stuck to STTN for more than a day or two and often are back to every 2-3 hours awake before you know it.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • Ruby - you'll have lots of tough days in these first few weeks, but also some moments that melt away the bad times.  I'm so glad that you had a good one today!

  • After I typed it, I rethought about it.  I think you're supposed to wake them up until they reach their birth weight, at the very least.  This was something that was drilled into me at the beginning, mostly because ZB lost a lot of weight at first.

Oh, babies that lose weight are a whole other story.  So true!

My kids all gained weight within 2-3 days after birth, so I think I was really lucky.

LOL.8 hours total, not 8 hours straight. She was definitely up at 3am to eat. Our pedi recommended feeding every 4 hours at night.
  • Lily is right, their blood sugar can tank if they sleep more than 4 hours straight in the first week. And then they are hard to arouse. However, mommas are desperate for the sleep.

I figured this is what you meant, and it is still a beautiful thing - hope you are able to sleep easily when she does.  My thing was that I was always anticpating him waking, so I didn't sleep so hot even when he was for the first month or two.

  • I couldn't reply the past few days, but all the advice you've received is fantastic. Just hang in there and take it day to day hour to hour. Keep yourself hydrated and fed too! And I know it's annoying to hear but it's a gentle reminder, this too shall pass. And before you know it she'll be smiling at you and it will all be worth it :)
