Has anyone ever dealt with bunions?
Right after and the day after my runs for the past few weeks I've been having pain in my right foot. It hurts on the side of the big joint of my big toe (the joint connecting the big toe to the foot.) When I push on the area, it feels almost like a bruise. It's painful to walk. And that big toe seems to pop a lot when I bend it. For those who have dealt with bunions, does this sound like a bunion? What have you done to treat bunions that has worked? Should I get new running shoes? It's only on my right foot and I've had my running shoes since May and haven't had any problems until a few weeks ago (which makes me think my shoes aren't the problem.) I've been increasing my mileage each week and at first, it only seemed to bother me after long runs, but I ran 2 miles last night and it's hurting again. Any advice?

Re: Has anyone ever dealt with bunions?
Do you track your mileage or have any idea how many miles you have on those shoes? They're really only good for 300-400 miles for most runners. New foot / leg pains are often a sign that you need new shoes so that's not a bad idea.
That said, it doesn't sound like bunions to me, not that I know much. My doctor said I'm starting to get bunions and suggested I be careful about wearing shoes (including running shoes) that don't have enough room in the toe area. For me, it seems like the big toe is starting to point inward a bit and the joint/bone is larger or more prominent than it used to be. It's not sore or bruised feeling though.

You might do a little research. I wouldnt toss them just yet (I generally alternate between a couple pairs anyhow).
On a related note, are you for sure doing cowtown? Are you running it with someone?
I decided on the Texas Half on January 28 in Dallas instead. MIL is running it, too. I'm really hoping the weather will be decent since I suck at running in the cold.
Do you have any races coming up? Are you doing Cowtown?

I don't think so. I had kind of wanted to / planned to do it, but I think my sister said she isn't doing it now. I don't do well on long runs by myself, so I won't sign up for a half by myself (I'm a pansy, I know!). OKC may be my next half then.
Whats your time goal? What distance are you up to? Are you doing a program or just kind of preparing on your own? Let me know if you want some company for your long training runs!
You might consider going to a specialty shoe or running store. I really like Foot Solutions on Memorial (south side, in a shopping center next to Men's Warehouse). They can measure your foot, look at how you stand and where your pressure points are, and recommend a good shoe based on that and the problems you describe. They might also be able to check out your current pair of shoes and tell you more.
If you feel it becomes necessary to see a doctor though, let me know. My podiatrist is AMAZING, and he has offices in Norman and Edmond.

I like Red Coyote a lot for this as well. They videotape you running on a treadmill and play it back to show you specific things about your stride. To me that is much more effective than just walking across a store in new shoes.
ETA: I would make sure to take your old shoes with you when you go somewhere like this.
Ginger - thanks for the dr. rec! I'll keep that in mind if it gets to that point. Hopefully I won't need it though
Wendy - Do you know if OK Runner has anything like that? If not, I may need to try out Red Coyote, that sounds pretty cool. Is it free to have them do all that?

I haven't settled on a time goal yet. I hear some people set 3 time goals, so if they don't reach their top goal they can at least aim for one of the others. I'm thinking about trying 2:30, 2:40, and 2:50, but honestly, I'd be fine with just finishing on this one since it'll be my first. I have a 10 mile run scheduled for tomorrow, that will be the longest distance I've gone so far. MIL created a training plan for me. It's similar to Jeff Galloway's plan where you have some shorter long runs thrown in. My long runs for the rest of the plan consist of 10 mi, 10.5 mi, 8 mi, 11 mi, 8 mi, and 6 mi the weekend before the race. Let me know if you want to run any of those with me! I enjoy running with other people, but just so you know I run kind of slow (about 12-13 min/mi on the long runs.)

It is all free for them to do that (and is free for fitting/recommendations from any running store). OKRunner does not have a treadmill or videotaping, but they do watch your stride as you walk around the store and give you input on if you over pronate / sublinate (at least in Norman, I don't think the other one does either, but I'm not positive).
This is good to know. I need to get to Red Coyote sometime after Christmas. I'm still running in the Nike Shox I bought solely for looks back in 2006. Time to upgrade.
