Has anyone been to Highlands, NC? Is it a fun place to go this time of year?
Adventures of A Girl and Her Apron
My parents live in Highlands, NC from May - October. It's a great place to visit to during the summer because it's a short drive, and when you get up there it's about 20 degrees cooler! I find going to the mountains so relaxing! If you like hiking, there a ton of great places to go hiking. Whiteside Mountain is one of my favorite hikes. There is also a hike from near town that goes up, and you can see the downtown from the top.. I just can't remember the name of the trail. There are also tons of beautiful waterfalls around! Dry Falls is not too far from town and is short walk, but they aren't that "dry". A little farther from town is White Water Falls. It is the highest waterfall west of the Mississippi. Very impressive. During the winter, you can head to Sapphire Valley and go skiing. I have never been, but I have gone and checked it out. If you have ever been skiing somewhere in CO or something like that, Sapphire Valley looks like a tiny little hill. It looks like they may be trying to open for the season this weekend. They don't get much snow up there, but they try to make as much snow as possible. There is also a snow tubing place half way up the mountain.. I don't remember the name of it, but I am guessing it's probably not open yet anyways. If you are going to walk around downtown, I would probably do that on Saturday. Most stores are closed on Sunday. During the winter, it is much, much quieter up there as most people visit during the summer. During the evenings, there is not too much going on. There are some nice restaurants in town, and near town. Let me know if you want any recommendations. Also, the auction at Scudder's in downtown is kind of fun to hang out at on a Saturday night, even if you don't want to buy anything. Yes, we ended up with a couple things last time we were at the auction (good thing Azlyn is good at putting up her number and bidding). I have no idea if they run the auctions during the winter or not. Overall, Highlands is probably a better place to visit during the summer, but I think you can still have fun in the winter too. The weather is still very nice for some hiking!
