Suggestions for Montreal?

My husband and I are thinking of spending a long weekend in Montreal in January for our anniversary. I have never been, and he went once when he was very young with a school trip.
I am looking for any suggestions on hotels, things to do, places to see, places to eat, and anything we should try to steer clear of. We're pretty adventurous, we enjoy museums and historic stuff. We also enjoy going off the beaten path and seeing less touristy stuff. We will be there for 2 or 3 full days.

For a hotel, I definitely recommend staying in Old Montreal. The last time we were there we stayed at Hotel Nelligan and loved it!
