Please explain: RE Fruit.

Some of you mentioned fruit (apples/oranges) in your christmas stockings....is this a normal thing?  I've never heard of it before.

Forgive me, I'm Jewish ;)

Re: Please explain: RE Fruit.

  • I think the tradition goes back to the great depression when getting an orange was a real treat.

I think some people also just like to put it at the bottom part of the stocking.  We don't do that though... so maybe someone else can give some insight.

  • We always do oranges, because my great-grandma did. As she explained it, back in the day (she was born in the 1800s) oranges were a mega treat in December in the midwest. You just didn't have fresh fruit. So an orange was a mega luxury.

  • We had a Christmas book growing up that was about a small bear and the arrival of Christmas.  The book was a scratch and sniff book and in it the bear got an orange in his stocking, so because of that we always got an orange in our stocking.
  • My grandma had a stocking for us at her house and she did oranges/apples and popcorn balls.  My parents never did that though.  My parents always gave me a new toothbrush...

I'm pretty sure this is it.

I also remember seeing oranges in stockings on Little House on the Prairie.  I was a latch key kid and watched a lot of TV.

  • My mom ddid oranges and I never really knew why, but I think Rox's theory is a good one.  I put one in DH's stocking and he was really confused.  His family is from Houston, so maybe that explains it!

  • Don't worry, Asil. I'm not Jewish and I've never heard of this either.
  • We always had an orange in our stockings and I think my parents both did growing up. I'm sure it stems from Rox's explanation but it also made our stocking look fuller because they were knit and it would weigh them down ;)

  • I never heard of it either. Or candy. Nothing edible, just the gifts that were small enough to fit.

That's interesting that there was nothing edible.  Most of ours is candy or yummy treats we like.  DH always gets beef jerky and I like good coffee.

I've heard of oranges and candy, but we never got them.  Ours were like yours.

ha, okay, I guess I'd heard of candy in them but we didn't get it. :)

  • yeah, it's a historical thing from when fresh fruit in the dead of winter was a treat.  I just like that it's not candy, not extra crap lying around the house and it's healthy.

  • We always had an orange in our stocking too but I figured it was because we had FFA fruit left over and my parents were trying to get rid of it.  We mostly received candy in our stockings but as we got older we also received things like refill blades for our razors, chapstick and other "necessary" items in addition to the candy.

  • I wish santa would bring me razor refills, those things are pricey!

  • We've always done an orange too (or clementine). I'm even planning on bringing some to the IL's, because it's just one of those traditions that make it Christmas for me.

  • We always had them in our stockings when I was a kid but I never knew where the tradition came from until now.  I just assumed my parents were trying to fill them.
