Re: South Padre Island
We have been many times. It's nice, I always felt safe. I would not plan go over to Mexico though, I never liked Matamoros and even Progresso is not like it used to be a few years ago.
We've had good experiences staying at the Holiday Inn Express out on the island, it's down on the far end, so less crowded. We usually stayed with family in Port Isabel. We had a good time deep sea fishing, on the dolphin watch, there is horseback riding on the beach, the turtle farm, lots of bars, dining, etc... My neice used to run one of the bars on the island, so that was our main activity
My number one recommendation is a tiny restuarant in Port Isabel called Fisherman's (it was painted blue last time we were there) and they have the BEST shrimp omelet...fresh, so fresh and great pancakes.
I would check into a vacation condo. There are a TON in South Padre. Recently some family decided to go down there to spend some time with their snowbird friends who go down there all winter and I helped them find a great furnished 2br 2ba condo for the month. If you are going to be there for any length of time it would be nice to have a full kitchen for some meals IMO. I can send you the website we used if you'd like, otherwise just search for South Pardre Island vacation rentals. Makes it feel a little more like home instead of a hotel? And the one they are staying in has cable TV, internet and a pool/hot tub that on the beach.
As for the area - I have been there a few times but its been awhile and I don't remember the resturants. The shopping however is the same at pretty much every store from one end of the island to the other. There is a HUGE shopping place with a great big seashell a little ways out of town, that was a lot of fun to go to. We also went to a Sea Turtle aquarium that is toward the north side of the island where it's less populated. And there is a big waterpark down on that end too I think but we've never gone there.
And as pp said avoid the spring break crowd unless thats what you are going for! Because now that they require passports to go out of the country South Pardre is a huge spring break place for college kids!
