I'm not sure if you know or could find out... I have a question about hemoglobin and iron supplements for babies. Ryan had his hemoglobin tested when they were retesting his bilirubin. His hemoglobin came back at 10.4. The pedi said to put him on trivisol with iron or polivisol with iron. He said to put Andrew on it also even though Andrew never had a blood test. I Dr. Googled of course and found info saying that iron supps given to infants unnecessarily can cause them to have problems absorbing iron from BM now and just in general later in life and it could cause problems with brain development. I also read, though, that low levels can cause problems with brain development. Do you know how low 10.4 really is for a 5.5 week old? Do you know the risks/ benefits of the iron supplement? I have low iron and I haven't really been remembering to take my iron supplement so if I start that up again, do you think it would help me to have more iron in my BM for him? Sorry to bombard you with questions... I don't want the pedi to think I am second guessing him but I also don't want to give my kids stuff they don't need.

Re: LoveofJoe
Not a problem.
I would not be worried about a hemoglobin of 10.4 at 5.5 weeks. In utero, baby's have fetal hemoglobin. They start making regular hemoglobin after they are born. As the red blood cells with the fetal hemoglobin complete their lifespan, the hemoglobin in babies drop because they regular hemoglobin hasn't caught up yet. This is called a physiologic nadir and usually occurs about 6-8 weeks. Ryan sounds like he's on a normal trend downward.
I do suggest vitamins for babies who are breast fed so they can get enough vitamin D. I'm not strongly for or against with iron. I do think you taking iron would also help.
HTH!
