Making use of floor in your coat closet

I'm going through a mad organization phase - if it's not nailed down, it's getting moved or trashed. As a result, I'm probably going to be on here with completely random questions such as this one: what do you keep on the floor of your front hall/area coat closet? Our floor is bare and if I can make organized (that is, not messy) use of it, I'd like to. I tried keeping shoes there but it got quite dirty.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I have no idea why it's rotated on here, it's right side up where I linked it from.

I have my vacuum, a box fan (the front of our house has no fans so I put this in the dining room window on nice days), a toy vacuum, and my steam mop.

  • Those huge Rubbermaid storage totes that I have NOWHERE ELSE to put. My closet fits 2 of them.

  • We don't have a large coat closet. We have racks of shoes and a container of hats, gloves, and scarves in ours.

  • Get an adjustable shoe rack & keep shoes there for easy access - not your "good" shoes, but maybe a pair of old sneakers, flip-flops or some of your DH's or kid's shoes if someone should need to grab a pair quickly.

Go to a carpet store or even Walmart and buy inexpensive carpet squares and cover the floor space in there whether it already be carpeted or not.  This way, if dirt accrues in the closet, you can just swipe out the squares for new ones & toss them, or take them to a laundry mat (big, utility washers) and toss them in those washers to clean.

You could also nix that idea and go for the tupperware drawers - like the ones college kids get for their dorm rooms.  This way, you will have a handy place to store winter hats, gloves, scarves, etc.

Or, I'd pace big, seagrass baskets so your kids can toss their bookbags in their when they get home from school.  Or, you could keep extra blankets & throws in the baskets as well.

I wouldn't store any cleaning products or any tool that comes in contact with cleaning products in your coat closet - especially if you're going to keep coats/clothing in there.

  • Our coat closet has bi-fold doors. On one side we have a set of shelves for shoes. On the other side we keep our vacuum, broom & a step stool.

We have two of these (one stacked on top of the other). We don't use all of the space but it's nice to know there's room for future shoes [:

  • I don't have a coat closet in this house, which drives me insane.

But in my old house, the coat closet was really deep. So on the back wall we put a little laminate bookcase and some canvas storage cubes on them. We kept one full of lanterns/flashlights because we had a ton of power outages, the emergency weather radio, a box of light bulbs, etc. The vaccuum lived in there too.

  • I have a shoe rack.  The bottom of my coat closet turned into a big pile of shoes and it drove me insane.

  • Our coat closet is tiny. The top shelf holds DVDs, then there's a bar for coats, then two wire shelves underneath. We have two baskets for hats, gloves and scarves, and all of our gift wrapping supplies fit in there. The bottom has a boot tray and is where we store hiking boots, snow boots and fitness gear (hand weights, resistance tubes, etc).

  • You caught me on a good week. We just decluttered our coat closet to get ready to sell our house.  All that is on the floor at this point is a bin of dog food, Dyson, carpet steamer, DD's folding table and chairs, and her dollhouse (which we only put away for showings).

  • There is no point of us having one of those my fiance and I only own 3 pairs of shoes 2 for me and 1 for him. I want more shoes
  • I keep the coats pushed to one side, so there is room to put my vacuum without it getting lost amongst the coats. Under the coats on the floor I have a little caddy with all my cleaning supplies (swiffers, resolve, windex, etc.).
