applying to a diocese

I am not Catholic but there is a job opening at the diocese for an admin assistant.

I have scoured their online employee handbook and the website, but cannot find if you have to be Catholic to apply. It does say you have to agree with all the Catholic tenets which I don't. But I don't think that will hinder my professionalism.

Does anyone know if you have to be Catholic to work for a Catholic diocese?

Re: applying to a diocese

  • I know that I applied to a Catholic college in their library.  During the interview, I was required to say how the faith would be integrated into my daily work and I was quizzed on John 3:13 (how does this apply to your life?).  Just a warning.  And I am a Catholic (albeit a lapsed one).

  • I worked for a brief time with Catholic Social Services as a counselor (which made me an employee of the diocese), and I'm not Catholic. Their beliefs obviously directed the mission of the company, but I agreed with that mission to serve and didn't have a problem with it. The only way I saw faith issues have a direct impact was that our insurance didn't cover birth control unless your doctor prescribed it for another medical need.

We got extra days off for the Catholic holidays (there are lots of them!), which was nice.  Apply for it, what do you have to lose?

ETA: Although I'm not Catholic, I am a Christian and have worked at 2 other faith-based organizations that were more overt about the faith basis. It probably depends on lots of factors, never hurts to apply and ask questions if you get an interview so you know your comfort level.

  • I work for a Christian organization. I had to sign a statement of faith/belief.

If you are not religious, it may be an uncomfortable work environment, to be honest. My weekly department meetings start out with prayer and devotionals, there is always grace before meals, there are optional bible studies and prayer gatherings, etc.

    Just a heads up.

  • Thanks for your replies.

I really would like to apply (the holidays and benefits are tempting) but w/ stargazertechie comments in mind, I know I would be extremely uncomfortable if I was forced to actively participate in those situations.

  • I work at a Catholic, diocesan university. They never asked me about my religious preferences in the interview or since. I'm not expected to attend or engage in any religious events or rituals.

I'd keep your mind open until you at least have an interview or receive specific information from the diocese that indicates otherwise.

  • I knew someone who was a social worker through Catholic services and had ethical issues come up a lot. She said management would tell her that they were going to look the other way if she needed to break policies (like talking to a teenager whose having sex about birth control) but she still could have been fired. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable working in a religious environment.
  • I am Catholic and worked for a Seventh Day Adventist organization. When I was hired I had to sign that I would adhere to certian rules (follow sabbath as evidenced by not working past sundown on Friday and not working on Saturday). However, I was not obligated to follow other rules of their faith (i.e not wearing jewelry, not eating shellfish or pork...etc). In addition, they had prayer and devotion every morning but it was from 9:00 until 9:15 and if you did not want to participate you could enter the meeting at 9:15...which many department heads did. I would want to clear up the obligations should you accept the postition as there may be exceptions to what is expected of you. I would hate to not take a job I was interested in on the thought that I would be forced to adhere to practices that I do not agree with.
  • I am Catholic and would never work for a Catholic (or for that matter, private) school again. I could go on and on about why, but basically, the parents RUN the show, the principal acts like he/she wants Christian values, but it's all about tuition $. I worked for 2 different schools over the course of 3 years, and would never go back. Go public.

    1. Not every Catholic school is like what you're describing. Both DH and I work for very mission-driven Catholic schools.

    2. The position the OP is talking about isn't even at a school to begin with.

Other posters described Catholic/private school/businesses they worked for.....same thing I did.....just my opinion, as you obv. have yours. Good to hear not all Catholic schools/organizations are fake. I grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school my whole life. I was shocked when I taught at two diff. schools how the parents/admin acted. I will never do it again. JMO.
