AJ will be two in a few weeks, and we're still waiting for that language explosion. He'll say about 15 words that we can identify, but many of them are very rudimentary, like "duh" for dog, duck, down, etc. We're constantly encouraging him to repeat words, and sometimes he's not even close. Like last night I said, "Can you say bubbles?" And he said "Tuh." Other times when we do language exercises, he becomes defiant.
He had tubes inserted about 2 months ago. Before that, one ear had quite a bit of blockage and tested poorly. Now his hearing is perfect.
For the other standard 2-year milestones, he's either on target or ahead. Sometimes his memory and attention to detail amaze me. I have no concerns about his social abilities either. He's the sweetest, most kind-hearted person I've ever known. He's extremely laid back, and I've attributed his language tendencies to that trait. But I'm starting to get more concerned.
Did anyone else experience this? How did it turn out?
I'll definitely talk to his pedi at his 2 year appointment, but there's nothing like insight from other moms. TIA.
Re: Anyone's child have delayed speech?
I don't want to scare you with my niece's story but the story is similar. My sister noticed her not saying words right and not being very talkative (compared with her older sister). My sister kept bringing it up at my niece's ped. appointments and the doctor blew her off - oh it's fine. When my youngest niece's speech was better than her older sister's my sister got a new doctor who took her seriously. Ran some serious hearing screenings at Blank - and my niece did in fact qualify for hearing aids. After getting those, and working with the heartland AEA, she is back on track and doing great.
It very well could be no big deal but if you feel like there is a problem I definitely would bring it up at his appointment. And if your doctor doesn't take you seriously - get a second opinion. I am a firm believer in mother's intuition.
We experienced (and still do to some extent) a severe speech delay with DD - she didn't hit her language explosion until 26 months and before 26 months she would only speak around 5 words. I recently sent a lengthy email via PM to NicksChick on this board - I'll PM it to you right now as I laid out in great detail and length the steps we took for DD as we noticed her speech delay around 16/18 months.
I'm happy to say that current day DD is (per her speech therapist) almost right on track with her peers in terms of speech....which is a complete 180 from where we were a year ago.
Sending you the PM now....don't hesitate to contact me (here or on FB) if you need absolutely anything at all!!
