Planning International Travel

Hello Travel Nesties!
Dh and I are planning a trip to Europe with my parents. My dad has traveled a lot (he's a professional pilot), however, most of his international traveling has been planned for him, and for work (plus HE was the transportation!) Are there any good guides or resources out there to help for planning that you've used and would suggest?
We are undecided about a trip for 7-10 days to Ireland or a 2 week trip and hitting several "hot" spots. We are in the VERY early beginning stages obviously - so we're doing research to decide.

There are some good paper guides out there like Fodors & Travel for Dummies. They make them specifically for each place.
Tripadvisor.com is one of my favorites. Fodors also has a site but I don't know the URL.
