Santa on a fire truck?

The volunteer fire department just drove by our house pulling santa in a sleigh. I have never seen anything like this before.  I'm assuming its a local tradition.  Was I supposed to give them money?  I asked the neighbor, and she said no, but there were people holding santa hats walking behind the sleigh, which makes me think maybe its a fundraiser?  I was taken a bit by surprise so I didn't know what to do, but I'd like to be prepared for next year.

FWIW, I'm in the Pasadena area.

Re: Santa on a fire truck?

  • They did that every year where I lived before and it was just for the kids really ... I never saw anyone collect or give money

  • We lived in Halethorpe last year and Santa came by as well. I've never seen that before, but other people from the area said it was normal.
  • I'm from harford county and they always did it when I was growing up (and still do).  yYeah it's mostly for the kids, but it also a chance to show a presence in the community and drum up donations.

Interesting...  I lived in Harford for 4 years and never saw it.

  • Our local fire department has always done it in both towns were I lived.  (One in Carroll County and one in Baltimore County.)  I have never seen them collecting money at the same time.   I know this has been a down year for fundraising, so it wouldn't surprise me it they had people carring hats or boots for donations.

  • They've always done it where I lived growing up in Baltimore County. That's when you know it's really Christmas :)
  • They do it here in crofton too! came last night. they dont collect money or anything. I think its really cool that they do it though. sean thought it was great.

  • Ours comes by on Christmas Eve, and they do donation stuff for the local volunteer fire department. Must be a 'south of Baltimore' thing, because I'm near Halethorpe too.
  • I grew up between Catonsville and Woodlawn and never saw Santa on a firetruck outside of a parade - certainly never in my neighborhood.

Now in Aberdeen they do it every year, but I've never seen someone collecting donations. I wish I knew ahead of time that they were coming. DD missed them one year and this year she almost missed them because she was half-naked, getting ready for bed. It was a total frenzy to get her outside in time.

  • Santa on the firetruck came through our neighborhood on Friday evening (ambulance escort and all!).  I'm pretty sure this is the first year it's happened and it scared the crap out of me!  I thought someone's house was on fire with all the noise!  No one was on foot collecting donations though.

  • I've never seen this. I've lived in MoCo, DC and now HoCo.

  • He came through yesterday afternoon in our neighborhood (Harford County), but they definitely did not appear to be collecting money.

  • Back home in PA, the local FD always drove around.  Santa gave out candy canes but they didn't collect anything.  The local FD in the Mago Vista area of Arnold sends Santa out on a truck and there are cars following it for you to give food donations.

  • They do this in our area too. We just so happen to be driving home when we got behind the fire truck. DD loved every moment of it. When do you get to see two big fire trucks driving around in the neighborhood with Santa on the back. Not very often! It's definitely not a fundraiser, just something that they do for the kids every year.

  • First of all, I read this as "Santa's truck on fire?"

I grew up in Columbia, and yes, the fire truck always came around with Santa. But I don't think they were collecting donations. He just waved and people waved back.

  • I live in Crofton, grew up here too, and our volunteer fire department has always done it.  They actually do it twice, once right after Thanksgiving and once closer to Christmas.  My BIL was santa one year too!  They really just do it for the community/kids, not as a fundraiser.

  • I grew up in Glen Burnie and they use to come around on Christmas Eve every year, they still do.  They would hand out candy canes.  Here in PA, they came around last night.

He came up to Bulle Rock 2 weeks ago.  We didn't go but years past he's actually come in and spent some time in the residents club.  Never noticed any donation thing attached though...

It's usually done my your local fire company(and volunteer).  You may want to check their website and see what they say or give them a call.

This is crazy.  When I was in Harford County, I lived between Aberdeen and Bulle Rock (yeah, you local folks know that narrows it down to like 2 neighborhoods and a trailer park - I was in the 1960s neighborhood lol).  4 years and we never saw Santa.  But I read in this thread that he goes to Aberdeen and Bulle Rock!

Then again, I knew people who had lived in Harford their whole lives and had no idea my neighborhood existed.

  • They never did this where I grew up but i lived in the country, like we had no neighbors.  Since we have moved to Halethorpe it has happened every year.  Kira loves it.
