Has anyone here flown into Venice? We will be going there soon, and just wondering if it's hard to navigate leaving the airport and reaching transportation. I read a little bit about it in a travel book at the bookstore today (obviously will read more!) and it sounds like we might have to take multiple transport modes i.e. train/bus/boat to get from airport to where we want to be. Looking for experiences thanks!
Re: Venice airport
It is a little planes, trains, and automobiles, but don't worry, it's well-marked (in English too, if you don't read IT) and relatively easy to do. I'd say the trip from the airport into the city proper probably takes the better part of an hour (it's not THAT far it's just the buying the tickets, wheeling the bags, part takes some time). If you were to drive from the airport to the central station (not that I'd recommend it, just saying for time comparison purposes), it takes about 25mins.
From the airport you can catch a bus to the central station-- bus/vaporetto terminal. If you have alot of bags or it's high tourist season (ie crowded) you might want to take a cab. Obviously, the bus is the less expensive route. From the bus depot, you walk across a parking lot and down a flight of stairs to catch a vaporetto (water bus). I'd strongly consider buying a pass, if you're going to be there a few days b/c the per fare rates are high.

It's a very small terminal when you arrive, so easy to navigate.
We took the Alilaguna vaporetto. They have a window right in the terminal, and they speak English so it's very easy to figure out which line you need to be on, how much it costs, etc.
It's about a 5-10 minute walk down to the water, but it's well marked. We waited about 10 minutes for the boat, then it took ~45 min to get to the San Zaccaria stop. Water taxis were much faster, but much more expensive.
I'll caution that if you need to take the vaporetto back to the airport or on to the train station when you leave, DO NOT trust the timetables. Make sure you leave yourself extra, extra time to get there. We got on the boat well over an hour before our train was supposed to leave, the timetables said a 35 minute trip, and we missed our train by nearly 10 minutes.
