Charley Horses

Does anyone know how to prevent Charley Horses?  I have had one the past two nights in my right calf.  If I continue to get them, it is going to be a long 10 weeks until Ella arrives.

Re: Charley Horses

  • We were told in our childbirth classes that they're usually caused by a deficiency in calcium, potassium, or magnesium.  Our instructor said to increase your calcium  intake first and see if that works.  If not, then try upping your potassium and then move onto magnesium.  And as soon as you feel one coming on, avoid pointing your toes and instead flex your foot upwards.  I know when I go to stretch out my legs at night I sometimes feel one coming on and as soon as I flex my foot it thankfully goes away.

  • Thanks!  I normally take a calcium supplement in the morning but forgot all my vitamins when we left for the mountians on Friday night.  Hopefully when I start taking them again tomorrow they'll go away.

  • I got them during my first two pregnancies, but only had one during my third.  I drank an extra glass of milk a day with my third and I think that's why I didn't get them.  I had milk with every meal and a small glass before bed.  With my other I had milk at breakfast and dinner, but not lunch.  The extra calcium can really help.

  • Eating a banana for potassium and staying well hydrated really helps

  • Add more potassium to your diet (bananas have a lot).  Also, drink lots of water.  Dehydration can be a BIG factor.  Also try some stretching in the morning.

Here are some stretches to do at home that are easy!

  • Calcium supplements did it for me when PG.
  • Ditto bananas and milk. If you're getting them at night have a glass and at least half a banana as a snack right before bed time.
  • I drink powdered magnesium in water before bed. Our baby class instructor suggested taking whatever supplement you're going to take (cal or mag) before bed to help with them.
