Wicked big window = wicked cold bedroom

Last night I felt like I was camping outside in my own bed. Winter has finally arrived here in northern Spain and the wind has been pretty brutal. For some reason, my bedroom simply does. not. heat up despite the fact I had the thermostat at 20 all day yesterday. I woke up around 3 and my nose felt like I had been out in the cold!

So, smart nesties, I'm asking if you have any ideas. I think the problem comes from the fact that in my bedroom, we have a window that runs the whole length of the wall. I sleep about a foot away from the window.  We have a night and day blind but that doesn't seem to block much of the cool air. We have the typical Spanish "persian blinds" on the outside but the strong winds somehow get through.

What on earth can I do? I'm freeeeezing!

Re: Wicked big window = wicked cold bedroom

  • My suggestion is a good down comforter and flannel sheets. Keeps me warm all winter long and we don't turn our heat on unless it gets below 13 in our unit.

  • Ooooooooh, flannel sheets. That might be my Christmas gift to myself. DH doesn't like them but he can get used to them!
  • Can you find clear plastic tarping, like what painters drape furniture with? You can hang it on the window, taping or stapling all around the frame and it'll block the wind, but won't block the light too badly. If you're still cold, getting an electric space heater for your bedroom might be an option.

  • We have really heavy velour curtains that are full hight (ceiling to floor) and extend about 15 cm on the sides of our really big window. I never feel any draft in our bedroom. Now in the living room I have way less curtain (same side of the house, 1 floor lower) and I can tell there's more cold coming in from the window there (our heating works fine so it stays warm, but I HATE having heating on in my bedroom, as it makes my nose all stuffy and I can't breathe and wake up 250 times a night.

Don't know if you like velour curtains, but it sure does work! (Make sure they're the heavy heavy kind of velour though, not the flimsy thin stuff, as that does nothing to keep heat in/cold out.)

  • I second thick curtains.

  • I was also going to suggest thick curtains.  Looks way better than plastic on window, IMO.

  • Thick curtains are a great idea. And can you not get a heating blanket or anything in Spain? That's what I would do.
