Moms of 2 +

Tell me about your labor with you 2nd baby.

Drake was born at 38 weeks after 12 hours of pretty easy labor and 45 minutes of pushing.

Just wondering how it was different the 2nd time around.

Re: Moms of 2 +

  • much different, but due to different care providers and birth environment.

Oli was an induction (41w + 6days) with cervadil and pit, PROM, lots of cervical checks, episiotomy, we both ended up sick. Labor from pit to birth was 13 hours, active labor was probably 7 hours.

Finn was born at home (42w +3 days), in the birth tub, in the caul. From first contraction to birth was 16 hours, active labor was probably 6 hours.

  • My first was 2 days overdue and I had active labor for about 14 hours, including almost 3 hours of pushing. Besides taking awhile, his birth was pretty traditional and complication-free (at the hospital, vaginal).

My second was 3 days early and had about 4 hours of active labor, including about 5 minutes of pushing. It was a piece of cake.

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • My first was at 36wks. My water broke and I had her 4 hours later.

My second came on her due date. I thought maybe I was starting contractions at midnight. She was here by 2am.

I felt more intense contractions with #2 but labor was shorter. There was also less tearing with baby #2 although she was much bigger.

  • DS1 came at 34w5d when my water broke at 12:50.  He was born after 1.5 hrs of pushing at 7:30 am.

DS2 was born at 38 wks.  first contraction at 5:15, born at 11:30.  2.5 pushes.  not hours, 2.5 pushes.  way more intense contractions right away.  by the time we left the house at 7 or so (had to get DS1 to daycare), I couldn't breathe or talk through the contractions, and they were every 2 minutes, lasting 1.5 minutes.  He would have been born sooner I imagine, but I got the epidural and zenne'd out.  :)  plus, my water didn't break until 11:28, when the dr showed up, and before that the nurse couldn't tell the cm I was dialted, because the bag was bulging in my cervix.  when they broke it, Chance came out.  :)

  • G was born 3 days early. Contractions started at 7 am, she was born by 7 pm.  A little short of 2 hrs of pushing (the epi had worn off, it was hard).  Nearly a 4th degree tear.

Ingrid was "induced" (only broke my water) on her due date. about 10 hrs of labor, more than 2 hrs of pushing. The pushing was total hell for Ingrid.  I thought it would be easier.  only 2nd degree tear though that time.

I had fairly uneventful, but also pretty painful deliveries.  I broke my tailbone both times.  I just don't think my hips were meant to bear 8 lb babies. :)

  • With my first, my water broke and I didn't start labor on my own after 12 hours of my water breaking, so they started pitocin.  From the time my water broke to the time I delivered, it was about 31 hours.  I pushed for about 45 minutes.

With my second I was induced, labored for  5 hours and pushed twice.

  • First was induced with cervidal, about 12-14 hours long, I had iv narcotics, about 15mins of pushing, minimal tear with no stitches....over all not a horrible experience but not the easiest either.

Second came on his own, 4 hours long, no pain meds, less then 5 mins of pushing, no tearing  (also my third was about the same as my second)...far easier then my first.
