on temp bedrest--need book/movie/hobby recs!!

I'm on modified bedrest/light activity, and I'm slowly going crazy just four days into it. I can at least fix my own quick meals, do laundry here and there, and go from couch to desk to bed, so it could be a lot worse. However, I would LOVE to hear suggestions of what to do with myself!

Here are the stats: I have streaming Netflix and Amazon prime, so I can get lots of older movies and documentaries free and instantly. We also have a Nook, iPad, and appletv. I'm pretty much set up to order anything from home.

So, suggest any book, movie, documentary, or TV series for me to get into. Or any other at home hobby/activity I can do!

Re: on temp bedrest--need book/movie/hobby recs!!

  • Some great books (if you haven't read them already): The Help, Water for Elephants, Hunger Games, Sookie Stackhouse series

ETA: I forgot to add Bright Young Things was a great quick read for me.

Movies: I recently saw Water for Elephants and The Help and both were really good (I know these are recent movies so you would have to order them). I also love wathcing any great period piece movie. Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Being Earnest, The Young Victoria

We recently starting watching Breaking Bad on Netflix and we've really liked it so far. It's not a very long series so far but Boardwalk Empire is a great series.

  • What sort of books/movies do you like?

There was a special on tv recently called 50 Documentaries to See Before You Die. Maybe you can find that list on the Internet as a starting point.

  • The best book I read in 2011 was Divergent by Veronica Roth. Not sure if you've read The Hunger Games (I think you have..?), but if you liked those you should like Divergent too.

There's a link in my signature to all the books I've read in the past few years. I've rated them all, so you can see what I thought was great, and what I thought was crap.

If you like old holiday movies, Holiday Inn is a classic!

As for hobbies... are you on Pinterest? That's a great time suck, and it gives you new ideas for hobbies and crafts and fun things you can do!

    Books read in 2012: 49

Good idea. I've read quite a few popular books, as I'm definitely a "reader". I read fiction/nonfiction, but I'm not one for chick lit like shopaholic, Nicholas Sparks, etc. I can do some young adult, but I'm not big into fantasy (vamps, HP). But I did love the Hunger Games. I also liked Cutting for Stone, The Help, any Erik Larsen, the Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo, and I read most contemporary nonfiction. I'm less picky about movies.

I'm on Pinterest, but good idea about the craft ideas. I don't normally think of crafting. And I just signed up for goodreasds yesterday!

  • I agree about Pinterest. I have to stay away...otherwise, it sucks me in and renders me useless for hours.

  • I think we have somewhat similar book tastes.  I recently read Her Fearful Symmetry and kind of liked it. I loved the Dublin Murder Squad trilogy by Tana French (in the woods, the likeness, the faithful place) even though I read them out of order. I also liked Girl In Translation.

If you can handle some fluff, try the In Death series. There's like 50 of them by JD Robb (Nora Roberts).

  • Have you ever watched LOST? It's on Netflix. We got seriously sucked into that show last year.
  • Ok, I know this sounds dorky, but I just asked for an origami kit for Christmas. Sometimes I just need a break from being totally plugged in all that time. A craft like that might be fun for something different to do.

  • Most of what I would normally recommend is fantasy (HP, The Name of the Wind, Game of Thrones). Based on books you'd said you've enjoyed, I would suggest The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The Book Thief, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Still Alice, Love in the Time of Cholera and The Night Circus.
  • Go old-school, and look up My So-Called Life on Netflix.

Also, Dead Like Me was a great way for me to kill time last winter when things were slow for me. I might re-watch the entire (2-season) series.

I also suggest the Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire) series. I find myself getting so sucked into that series that I literally have to take breaks because I think about the characters when I'm not reading the books...that's probably a weird personal flaw thing.

  • Do you have the seasons of FRIENDS on DVD? That's what I always watch when I have the chance Big Smile

I "kind of liked" Her Fearful Symmetry, too. It was fascinating, and I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't say it's on a favorite list for me.

Never heard of Dublin Murder Squad trilogy or Girl in Translation, so I'll definitely check into those. Thanks!

Love the old school idea fuzzy!

I keep hearing about the Game of Thrones series, so I'll have to add that to the list.

  • Can you bake? You could sit at the table for most of it, after you spend several hours on the internet looking for recipes of course!
